My 5 month Rolex OP 39 will not run unless I wind it at least 20 times. Is this normal?

I believe the booklet on my milgauss says turn crown at least 30 times before the movement will kick in

Very normal. Roughly 20 winds is half power, 40 winds for full power.

The automatic mechanism keeps the watch would, buy very few people move enough in a day to wind a watch from dead to full just by movement, hence the recommendation to wind it to get it going

Same here with my 116610LN which is 6-7 months old. No idea why is it that way.

Do you mean every morning as you put it on?

If you had the watch fully wound up on Day 1...
then wore it all day with average activity at work or play...
and it previously was running each morning...
but just recently began to act this way...

Then you have one of two problems...

First is you may have been operating in “power reserve debt mode” recently. What this means is the activity level is insufficient to fully restore the power reserve. The solution is two-fold: become more active, or wind the OP as you put it down for the night.

Second is a possible problem in the perpetual auto-wind mechanism. Another two-fold solution: send it to RSC for warranty work, or live with it and wind the OP as you put it down for the night.

I have an OP too. From stopped, 20 turns of the crown will usually get the seconds hand going. I wind for 20 more after that to get to a full wind (I think).

That has been my experience with ETA movements as well. Rolex takes more turns to start for some reason.

My little SARB035 starts its [surprisingly lovely, for the price] second hand sweep just by sneezing at it. Seriously, it's been in my case for ~9mo and if you pick it up to look at it & the rotor moves once, it starts.

The Power Reserve should be 48 h. But it is probably a good idea to check that too.

It shows this behaviour when it was resting for a while and out of power. I asked my dealer they said they have to sent it in for service. Meanwhile it is back. They changed parts but it still needs at least 18 wounds before it runs. So it works slightly better. Neither my AD nor the service center told me that this could be normal.

My moderns start up around the 12 turn mark but over the past year need an additional wind or two. Not sure if that means the movement is degrading or just breaking in.

Did you check the power reserve before and after service? How many hours you get on power reserve?
