New Sub all of a sudden losing time
Hello all,
First post here but long time lurker. I bought my Sub brand new last December and have worn it pretty much every day since. I don't baby this thing. I wear it to work and on vacation. Anyway, I time my watch occasionally and it has always kept great time. Been running +1.7s per day. I just checked the time now and it all of a sudden lost 20 seconds. I have never dropped it but I do vaguely remember catching it on the back of my office chair when getting up a couple days ago. It wasn't particularly hard from what I remember. Has this happened to anyone? Should I wait and see how it goes? Should I pull the crown and take it in to get looked at? I promise I'm not the guy that obsesses over the little things but this seems like it could be a big thing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |

Loss of 20 seconds over how long - a day? Did you fully wind it lately? What source are you using to track accuracy?

I don't ever wind it unless it stops from not wearing it continuously which is rare. I wear it every day and just keep it dial up overnight. I use the WatchTracker app on my phone to time it.

The last time I checked the time was 5 days ago and it was +44s. I checked it today and its -26s so actually more than 20s difference. I check the time using a WatchTracker app. I never wind it because I wear it every day. The only time I wind it is if it stops when I wear another watch which is rare.

Would expect its your watchtracer app thats the problem or owner error, and just because you are wearing your watch dont mean you are winding your watch. Its wrist movement that winds the watch and even when worn, will do no harm to give watch a full manual wind once a week to keep mainspring at full power-reserve.

Took it into the Dallas RSC. They took it back and said something was wrong with the movement and that it was out of Rolex specs. Unfortunately I had to leave it with them so I am without my Sub for a while. The one positive was that I got to go to the RSC. Very cool place!

Things happen even with Rolex. Its why they offer a five year warranty. Let Rolex look at it and fix whatever might be the issue.

Just bring it to a watchmaker which has a timegrapher. They will see it within a few minutes.

When tracked with a digital g-shock, my 2004 14060m is about +7 spd, but Toolwatch has it at +70.6 spd. Use a reliable source to measure time against.

Watches frequently come in with a complaint that it is too fast or slow, and when we check it in all positions both at fully wound and 24hrs it often performs well within Rolex spec... Customers conviced it isn't accurate yet we have proof that it is, difficult situations. |

Got the watch back. They overnighted it to me free of charge which was very nice of them. The watch is running even better than before. So far running +1.1spd. The invoice doesn't say what they did. It just says they checked the movement so not sure what they did. Anyway, I'm a happy camper.

Glad they took your watch in.
Same thing happened to my DJ41. Ran perfect (less than +1 spd), then went straight to running -4 per day in the span of a few months, then -9 after a few more. So with all respect to the above posters, your watch is messed up and needs to be fixed. I heard all teh same excuses. Not moving enough, not timing it correctly, etc. Mine was gone for three weeks to Dallas RSC, came back and now it runs almost spot on. Like +1 spd, and loses it at night rested crown down. I haven't opened the crown for 3 months to wind it or set it. It's +2 seconds ahead of NIST time this morning. Worn 18 hours every day. You should expect near perfection from your watch, it's what we pay for, and it's certainly capable of running near perfect. Good luck! |

I am no movement expert, but I believe watches are not as accurate when the mainspring is nearly depleted. Maybe your wrist movements after sitting all night are never really winding your watch to full power. Try, as others have suggested, to manually wind the watch then see how it runs. You may be surprised.

A Sub losing 20 seconds per day after “catching it on the back of my office chair” would be a concern for a “tool watch”.
