I knew I wasn't crazy: prices in 2012 really were THAT low

So last night, I was bored and reminiscing on when I first wanted to buy a Rolex around 2012. I didn't join the forums until 2014 but I had $5,000 in 2012 that I wanted to spend on a Rolex and I was frequently monitoring the classifieds. Which brings me to last night when I was looking at prices 7 years ago from this week:

-16610LV for $5,985
-16570 Polar (z-serial) for $4,275
-16710 Pepsi for $4,800
-BNIB 116710LN for $7,475
-BNIB 116610LN for $6,875
-BNIB 116610LV for $8,400

and just for fun, a BNIB Nautilus 5711 was $23,750

Man how the times have changed...

I passed on the last 16600 sea dweller from my AD because I thought $5200 (discounted) was too much to spend on the outgoing model.

Ugh.

That’s about right. Crazy to think back then you could get two 16710 for the asking price of one today.

I just wished I had jumped back into SS Rolex back then, at the time I had a 2 tone DJ & was transitioning to the GS line (2010 & on).

In Dec 2010, I bought this to celebrate my 50th birthday which was in 2012..

It was £4070.. I walked in off the street and there were 2 in the window and a couple of the newer LVc’s, and a load of Sub C date and no dates GMT’s etc.
The sales man tried to persuade me to go for an LVc but I’d made my mind up that I wanted the 50th anniversary model for my 50th anniversary

I paid reseller prices on a 114060 in 2016. After servicing the watch and then selling it to another reseller two months ago I made $50 by wearing a SubC for 3 years.

I still find it amazing that only a few years ago I picked up a BLNR for a little less than retail. At the time, the model was so popular that I couldn't get the "usual" discount.

(To be fair, I got lucky -- I bought it in the brief period after it was becoming more available but before all steel models started spiking in value.)

I bought my Sub for 1350 GBP in 95 and my SD for 2250 GBP i think in 2006.

The cost was relative though in 95, it was a big big purchase for a watch. My earning power had went up by 2006 (thank goodness), so it wasn't such a massive purchase as it was back in the day.

Unless you can Marty McFly back with a fist full of dollars or pound notes, Its dreaming. Nice dreaming of course, but still dreaming.

May be fun to create another thread in 5-7 years time where everyone can lament the fact that they were willing to pay $15-20K for a stainless steel GMT. We never know what the future will bring, but what goes up often comes down eventually.

Not time value of money. These are watches, not houses

I think they will revert in price to an extent. Rolex historically has retained their value so well that it'd be hard to imagine it going significantly below MSRP, particularly the so-called hot pieces.

OK.
If only I'd bought those Amazon shares in 2009.
If only I'd bought that 964RS in 2001.
If only I'd bought that Dali in 1977.
If only I'd bought that LVc in 2015.
If only I'd bought another Bitcoin in 2011.
If only I'd bought another case of Chateau Lafite in 1999.

Both buyers & sellers (ADs) benefited from Rolex prices in 2012. Buyers who spent their money back then & held onto their watches saw an increase in value over time. ADs received their payments, got rid of old stock & likely reinvested the proceeds back into their businesses. Time value of money therefore applies in both instances.

You want regrets? My dad bought a Patek 3712 in ‘05 for £12k. Sold it around the time the recession started for ~£20k. They’re now £100k+ watches.

I'm pretty sure Facebook and Instagram had a lot to do with these crazy prices. I know a bunch of folks who are interested in watches now that they see them in their newsfeeds. A click here, a click there, and boom.....
