I will be buying my first Rolex. I am over 40 but not old.

For a first Rolex, would you recommend buying a Submariner or a Daytona? Is a Daytona more of a fad?

i suggested a ss daytona as 40 years old gift and a counter argument was made. and that argument was it can be very difficult to read time off a daytona and i stood corrected...

it's up to you chronograph or divers?

Daytona is in no way a fad. I chose the Daytona. It really is only up to you. SS Subs are a dime a dozen I feel, but that in no way takes away from it's beauty.

Buy the one you prefer the watches are miles apart in terms of style and virtually impossible to compare......two great options though

I'd go with the Sub, as it's such an iconic and perfect piece. With the money left over, I'd add a Speedmaster, which is my favorite watch of all time. That way you get two legendary watches, and will probably still have some cash left over

Depending on what you are looking for and what you like-the Sub could be the easy choice, or the other way around. Totally different.

daytona is not as legible because "loud" subdials.

sub would be better for older eyes, and you have a bezel to turn if you really need a "chrono".. daytona is more allure and rarity

Well with opposite ends of the spectrum here you may as well through in the GMT while your at it. If that is not an option I think I would go after the Daytona. The more complicated the movement the more fun the watch becomes. There are far to many Subs out on the street. Can’t you get a Sub no date and a Sub Date for the price of a SS Daytona?

My first rolex was a TT datona, i still have it and i still love it. I used to feel uncomfortable wearing it for work and day to day use, Some people see it as flash and it marked easily.

I then bought my ss sub no date i wear it as my every day it is a great watch never gets noticed just understated class,

Now whenever i put the daytona on it feels special, it just does it for me.
If you put a gun to my head,

and you would have too! to get me to part with any of them, i would keep the daytona .......
My answer to your question is get the one that speaks to you!! and save for the other. You cant go wrong what ever you choose..

Don't buy a watch because of its reputation, buy it because it speaks to you

Both are great watches, and any steel Rolex sports watch will hold its value.

Coming from someone who has both, I'd lean heavily towards the Sub since I prefer a date on my primary watch. My suggestion, check out an SS GMT (old style), that is the one for me out of all of the options by a far margin.

I say buy the daytona...40 years old? you need to reward yourself...sub you can buy it anytime...but i say go for the daytona...you can get the sub next time as your 2nd watch at age 41...

I will buy the SS GMT IIc, its more functional watch, it looks like the SUB, but the difference is that the bezel is ceramic and it has 24 hour hand. You could set watch on three time zones at one time. This is just my preference, whatever you choose, you will be happy, they are all good watches.

They are two completely different watches, it's like comparing apples to zebra's. The sub is a classic tool watch and the Daytona is more of a dress watch. Which one do you like and which one fits your lifestyle? Do you need the date feature? Would you ever in your life actually use the chrono features, if not why pay for them? I personally prefer the sub, but I am a tool watch guy and hate polished center links, the Daytona does nothing for me. I would buy a Omega Speedmaster over the Daytona and buy a Sub date like someone already stated. Good luck with your decision.

Assuming we are talking about a new SS watch here.

In this not so good economy I would get the SS Daytona; unless you are a good friend of an AD, when the economy bounces back, it will not be easy to get a New Daytona. If you don't like it later on, you can flip it or just get a used Sub.

I bought my watch right before the recent economy crash, so a new Daytona was not even an option.

But surely you can tell from my signature that I am very happy with my Sub-Date.
