training on one exactly like this, talking to a company about purchasing one, but at close to 300k its a little pricey!!! comes out to 26k downpayment and around 1800\month payments... ouch!! but has autopilot, g1000 nav, terrain mapping, etc.

I am with Karis... If you can afford it without jeopardizing anything... And you love flying. My vote would be to do it. Life is so very short. Do what you love!

yea, what i am finding is it is cheaper to rent the plane whenever i want it. the rate is 145\hr + fuel but thats it. owning is requires completly tearing down the engine and rebuilding every 2 years, paying for the pad, insurance, etc.

On a swing through Arizona, I ended up in Prescott, visiting Honeyman [local honey].
It was a nice day to check out the valley from the air. I found out they couldn't schedule any air tours that day. But for half the price, I took a lesson in a . . . 152, maybe? If the 152 is an old VW Bug, that plane you picture would be an Audi A6. Yes? Since you are a pilot, the next Rolex will be a GMT? |

If you love flying you can not look at it as losing $300,000.00. You are enjoying a hobby and we all know hobbies are expensive!!! You also must decide if buying the plane is a priority to the pursuit of your hobby(pleasure) or as you said you can rent a plane as needed. Life is too short so enjoy yourself because you live only once and do not want to have any misgivings!!!
Everyday I am grateful to be alive and fortunate for all I have!!!

My Dad and I built about 60% of a Lancair back in the 80's. Then he sold the project.
I still think if it flies or floats, rent it. For that 1800 monthly you can fly a couple hours each weekend in a rental. You never have to pay for maintenance or a pad. It's kind of like joining a country club, but without reciprocal play. There are too many good public courses out there. |

Flying usually breaks down into four catagories (1) personal, (2) personal business, (3) commercial, and (4) military.
Of the four, personal flying is the one that decreases over time after acquiring the training/ticket. If your goal is to have fun, which is the only reason to learn to fly, and not expand your flying into a career or fly for your own business then RENT. I have flown for many reasons and I became a CFI so that others pay for my flying. Unless you have a wad of cash to spend on an airplane to sit or lease back to a flight school then RENT. The 172 you showed with a G1000 panel and integrated auto pilot is a very nice plane. But I must be honest, other than personal flying for your business, why fly IFR in that plane. Man, to stay current and safe is an on-going training exercise that most private pilots with an IRF ticket do not keep up with. I love flying and I find out what is the expectation of each of my students. If all they want it to fly for pleasure, I would never tell them to own a plane unless they fly over 200 hours per year. Finally, while I will train them to get their IRF ticket, I drill into them that unless they fly IFR on a regular basis, they will become a statistic. |
