are smart watches really watches?

Hi Everyone -

I have a new article on Horolonomics.com where I question whether smart watches really are watches, as traditionally understood.

Please note that I mean no insult to those who own and love smart watches, I've owned one too! Rather, I seek to provide details behind why the overlap in these products is far less than commonly believed.

Interesting opinion piece read, thank you for sharing.

The big question now in my mind - is a smart phone a phone, or just a new way of interacting with a computer ?

How you define the various defining characteristics is interesting as well - I do wonder if perhaps they could be weighted in some way.

As being able to wear on the wrist and read the time from, may be enough to define a (wrist) watch on their own.

As tech changes definition have to change as well.

To me you can call it a smart watch if you want but really it’s a wrist computer that can display the time.

A pocket watch became a wrist watch, that became a computer.

This is a classic example of overthinking.

If it tells time and is worn on the wrist, it's a watch, regardless of whatever else it does.

Just the idea of having some computer strapped to my wrist, where people can contact me, track me, interrupt me at any time gives me the shivers! While I do have a smart phone, most of the time it’s switched off. I switch it on when I want to use it.

My Leatherman is a multi-use gadget that offers several cutting options, but I don't really consider it a 'knife'.

Well they are watches, just disposable ones. I don't find the fitness stuff useful, that's just marketing. Good ole MPH and miles run/rode and the scale is all the data anyone needs. And of couse anyone being honest with them selves knows if they are pushing them selves in the gym. And god knows, the watch is not going to tell you to lay off the doughnuts.

My issues with them are 1) yet another thing I have to charge, 2) disposable after a year or so), 3) No real sentimental value, and 4) Companies use the watch to make folks more "connected" (addicted) to their devices. I have sat by folks at meetings and as soon as the watch buzzes, they pick up the phone (because of course the watch screen is really to small to do anything with-like watching pavlov's dog), 5), Im not comfortable with having a device emitting radiation on me 24/7 (Yes, yes, I know what the company research says, but there is no long term data) And 6) if not already, they will be able to be hacked into easily. A Vet buddy of mine shared an article where enemy troops were tracking US solders movements on their base because of their so call smart watches. No thanks for me.
