Exhibition Pieces

Just passed through Zurich Airport this evening. The local Rolex jeweler showcased Explorer 2 Polar, white and black OP 39, some platinum Daytonas, rose gold TT GMT, green Milgauss, TT Skydweller, some 41 datejusts in steel, and generally other rather looked after models, but no submariners, gmts or daytonas in steel. All those were exhibition pieces not for sale. I do not know whether other jewelers do this at other airports. But all those nice references are simply there to pile up dust in the windows for no good reason. The friendly sales rep, however, offered to just come by more often, they sometimes have nice pieces for sale. The for sale pieces present were a lot less enticing, however. So he lost me there.

i feel like there's an argument to be made for either side.

I like the idea of always having a model in stock for people to try out. I have yet to see any SS sport models personally. Having them always available for people to look at would go a long way to help consumers make educated buying decisions.

However, i also agree that it's preferable to see these on owners wrists rather than collecting dust. There really isn't a good middle ground but at least this place is trying something different.
