Fun place to window shop. Even before the stainless frenzy, none of them seemed to want to sell watches out there.

Wonder what the value of that window display is? 1M? More?

I live in NYC and wondered the same thing. I stroll down a few times a year just to look and try on and in my 15 years of checking them out, they have never been motivated to sell. None of them.

Maybe they have other means of income, but not moving inventory is generally a business killer.

I walked through there Friday. Only saw two BLRO’s on display, multiples of all other models, even blue Skydwellers. I can only speculate that there’s a few Asian or Middle Eastern country shoppers who will gladly pay their prices.
I found another unlikely source for vintage and near vintage Rolex, there’s a small counter in the Bergdorf Goodman’s Men’s Store on 5th Ave. Their prices were high too, $22K for an 116520 and $44K for an 16520. Both nice examples but more than what seems like market value. |

So... a few years ago we were in NYC and I was buying my wife a trinket, and the store we were in on 47th had a bluesy, this is before the recent SS shortage, and I came this close || to buying it. As it turned out, I had been looking for a bit, and knew the market, and bought one from a TRF seller a few weeks later for not much less than the 47th st. guy was selling for... maybe $300. Two points:
a) They like to negotiate b) They have no patience for lookie-loos. While I was in there, some guy stopped to look at some watch (I don't recall which one, but it was priced in the teens, not a Rolex) and the salesguy/owner was very abrupt and short with him, nearly rude. I asked him later, why he wouldn't give the guy the time of day and he said, "he has no intention of buying that, just wasting my time". Whereas me, I don't know if it's because I was wearing my green beanie hat that said "tourist" on it, my Southern accent or my lovely wife who kept pointing at shiny baubles and saying "oh honey, you should buy that", he treated us with respect and patience, and made a sale. I bought my wife a nice semi precious ring. I got a good price. I think. He later said that he was surprised that I didn't buy the watch; he was sure that he had a sale.

Live in NYC and have purchased several watches on 47th. Know your prices and negotiate quickly and decisively. You may make a deal.
My favorite is Gabriel of Watches Off Fifth (20 West 47th, Suite 1001). A straight shooter and very nice man. |

Nothing epitomizes the RM bubble than that pic. Now bring in the other grays worldwide and there is your supply.
Lots of dead money on 47. |

I go there almost daily as I work very close. It's a nice pass time, I usually go with some earphones or pretending I'm on the phone. It's almost impossible to do some window shopping without being stopped at every store with "are you buying? selling? come inside". I also love how some stores put their saleswoman (often attractive) by the window
