Be vigilant when wearing your Rolex in London. Came across this article today, not sure if it has already been posted.

It was. But it quickly turned into a political circus and was subsequently locked.

What are the odds on this one?
They all go south.

I started the thread and it went south rather rapid apparently. Was subsequently deleted.

That's an awful story to read..... I know that street very well and it's not a rough part of London. I often walk along it - wearing nice watches too.

Perhaps more Police on the streets and tougher prison sentences might be the beginning of a solution.

When I first heard about the story, I thought he was leaving Harrods with a purchase. Looks like it was at midnight and happened to be near Harrods and mugged for a watch?

How in the world would someone know in the dark that you have a Rolex on unless it was solid gold or iced out and visible on the wrist easily enough to distinguish it in the middle of the night?

People that buy stolen goods are equally to blame. Even buying a fake is supporting crime.

Maybe this is "dark" humor but probably the only thing worse than getting killed because of your Rolex watch is getting killed over a $100 fake.

I read this story earlier today and felt really sad for the victim.

That’s society these days.

That’s London these days.

Life is cheap.

Yes it had already been posted. London is so heavily surveilled but crime still happens regularly and in broad daylight. Imagine London without CCTVs, it'd be bedlam.

If indeed it was a Rolex my guess was that the victim was wearing a 116500LN or above open market value-wise.

I was just in London and our cab driver told us a story how various middle eastern nationals have fallen victim to watch robberies because they were wearing VERY expensive watches. He was talking about this very neighborhood (Knightsbridge).
Most victims give up their watches without a fight. I am not suggesting anything, but this does not seem to be an isolated case.

A sad tale. However the murder rate in New York is roughly twice that of London....the chances of being caught-up in something like this are tiny. And as nothing was stolen, we can’t be sure what the motive really was.
Still, horrid, and I hope they are caught and spend the rest of their lives in jail. That’s where they belong.

Paul Thorpe?!?!?

You don’t need some UK based ex-watch dealer to advise you about how dangerous London can be.

Right. And the population of NY is over twice that of London. What’s your point?

His friend who was with him at the time has already provided a statement that the muggers wanted his watch.

Makes me laugh. Does it make you feel safer, making statements like the chances being tiny?

London, like many cities can be a very dangerous place. And these days, it doesn’t mean off the beaten track, or at night.

These threads always end up in a pointless Europe v USA spat.
I didn't see it but I imagine the other thread was shut down when the g++s word came into it. That's how it usually goes.
Every place on earth can be dangerous at any given point in time - nothing new.
