Rolex 6426 (hand wind movement) making weird noise when winding

Hello all,

I have owned a few Rolex's over the years and just picked up a new to me Rolex Oyster Precision 6426 with the hand wind Cal 1210 movement. When winding the watch, it winds like it should but around every seventh turn it makes a mechanical click noise that sounds like a date being changed. This is not a date watch.

I wanted to get your opinion to see if this is normal or if you might know what the issue may be?

Does it stop winding eventually, or can you wind it forever with the occasional click?

I just wound it 30 times and it made the noise about 7 times. That is on top of winding it around 15 times 2 hours ago.

Not normal. When you wind it, do you turn the crown in one direction only or with a back and forward movement?

I only wind it in one direction. The forward direction that winds the movement.

So my question stands. If you keep winding it, will you eventually hit the point where you can't wind any further? Can you fully wind the watch? Or will it keep turning indefinitely, like an auto-winding movement? I'm trying to understand if you have a mainspring problem.

How many turns can this movement take? I dont want to damage it. I will try winding it some more.

I just wound it an additional 30 times with long winds and it would make that clicking changing noise about every third wind. Still have not hit any resistance and it keeps winding.

Broken mainspring probably.

Probably won't hurt anything, but it is not going to run properly until you have the mainspring replaced.

It is not a big repair.

No, but the power reserve will probably be poor, and the watch may not keep good time. If you're planning a total service anyway, replacing the mainspring is pretty common.
