I’ve got some family hauling to do over the Holidays.
Anybody have experience with the Thule roof top carrier ??

I had one on the wife's GL450 (as if there wasn't enough room in that behemoth) for long trips, but it prevented me from parking in the garage.

Very useful, secure and served its purpose well.

Now that the kids all have their own cars, and she downsized to a GLE, I gifted it to a friend to use for his skis.

My advice to you is that if you are only using it a few times, rent one, or search craigslist for a used one. They sometimes end up like home gym equipment, only taking up space in your home.

People forget these things are up there.

Yep,was my wife’s idea too

I never argue with her, though.
I’m too afraid she’ll send her flying monkeys after me

But we will be hauling kids and sports equipment for many more years to come
I think it will be used regularly.

It's pronounced "too-lee", not " thuwel". It's Swedish.

We have one on our Audi and just drove from San Francisco to British Columbia. Although Audi branded its supplied by Thule. It’s a life saver for skis and all sorts of other goods.

I have both a Yakima skybox that goes on the roof and a Thule Transporter hitch cargo box. The hitch box stays out of the way and works well for shorter or thicker items. But it blocks the backup camera. The roof box works well for skis, chairs, and flatter items. ,any times I use both for road trips to preserve cabin space.

But I agree that you should put some sort of sticker on your windshield to remind you of the box on the roof for garages and drive thru situations.

When I was cycling I heard a lot of horror stories of people driving into their garages with their bikes still on the roof rack. I heard so many stories that I became paranoid I was going to be that guy and I bought a traffic cone. Every time I backed out of the garage to put the bikes up I’d put the cone at the lead edge of the garage. That way there was no way to pull back in without moving the cone and reminding me to remove the bikes. $10 cone probably saved me thousands in damages. Every type of roof rack should come with one.
