SS Sky-Dweller?

Hi,

I'm starting to gain a significant liking for the Sky-Dweller. A couple of questions which someone might be able to help me with:

01 - Metals: Is there a SS Sky-Dweller, or are they all now PMs? I see on the Rolex site they have a 'Oyster Steel and White Gold', so can't really figure out if this is a SS model with elements of White Gold, or the main metal is White Gold. I'm not particularly looking for a SS version, but keen to learn everything about the watch.

02 - Waiting Lists: does the SD fall into the same bracket as other SS models and even a YG Daytona, or are they easier to obtain than the other / more popular models?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The SD is available in: SS, 2 Tone gold/steel and precious metal.

The blue dial SS is arguably the hardest to get Rolex period. Precious metal are mush easier to find.

Don't get one unless you want your other watches to gather dust. It is a baller piece.

I love my TT SkyD black. Sometimes I think I would have liked the white dial better, but the black is beautiful. The SS is harder to find and the premium for the TT wasn't that much frankly.

A SS skydweller falls into category of sportd models when it comes to difficulty to get. The Blue Dial SS is like the unicorn.

Amazing watch. Two tones are in some cases cheaper. I debated and decided the SS white dial was the best option for me (most legible, works with pretty much all my attire, cleanest looking etc) Blue is really nice as well but for me not legible enough.

It’s a baller piece as someone said. The ring command bezel is so slick and ingenious. This is the most complicated watch Rolex has ever produced. The blue dial is flat out impossible so I settled for the black which I’m really liking

As others have already said, it is only the bezel that is precious metal - I guess put there as it won't discolour from frequent handling. I am not sure if the batons are white gold too - they might be.

I don't think you'll have much joy from a Rolex dealer, they are in short supply - but if you do, I hope you enjoy it. It's great watch and I enjoy wearing mine.

Thank you all for the replies.

Great looking watch. They don’t seem to be asking for anything too crazy on the grey market.

I bought one last week from a grey dealer. No AD in the UK I have contacted would put me on their list. My local AD was allocated four SS Sky Dwellers in 2019, one black, one white, two blue. I was miles off the bottom of their list. No hope.

I had a TT black dial on order. It's been a year. When the price rise was announced it made me realise that I didn't really want a TT black dial model, I was just settling for an alternative to the one I really wanted.

It's a fantastic watch. The only two minor things for me have been the deep set date window which is considerably more difficult to read than an Explorer or Sub date, and the bracelet, which I have got to nearly fit perfectly, but I could do with a half link to get it absolutely right. The SD 43 half link works. So I'll be looking for one in the New Year.

If you can get onto an AD wait list for a SS Sky Dweller, and are prepared to wait years, you're in a better position than many. It's a very difficult to obtain watch through the AD network. If you live long enough it is worth the wait. If you can't wait, I believe it to be worth the grey premium. But I would say that, wouldn't I?

Good luck with it. It is a truly clever and visually beautiful watch.

To me, the SkyD is the ultimate Rolex. Surely there are more iconic ones due to longer history, but SkyD will be a classic.

1. By rule, whenever you see a fluted bezel, it's always gold, for any model Rolex. For the SkyD, SS examples all have gold bezels, hence the "Rolesor" branding.

2. SS examples are extremely hard to come by, you will need to be on the list. Blue is the rarest, white is probably the most common.

As someone else said, I think the Sky Dweller is destined to be a classic in years to come. My contact at Rolex told me that Sky Dwellers are not produced in the same quantities of other watches because of the complexity of making and servicing the movements. Now whether that is true or not, no one knows, but Rolex certainly isn't pumping these out like Subs.

I went with the TT in black. I find it much more interesting than SS, and honestly more handsome. It's somewhat easier to find TT examples at MSRP, I was lucky.

I was fortunate enough to get a white skydweller early November and absolutely love it.

I say that I am happy with my collection, but I can say that the one watch I would add in 2020 is the Sky-Dweller. I love everything about this watch from the size, complication, and look. My favorite is the white dial followed by the blue. I say if you like it, get it.

Thanks all.

I had my mind set on a YG Daytona, however as much as I love the Daytona, I had a strange realisation yesterday, that while the Daytona has a busy face (something I like), it still doesn’t have a Date function or a Dual Time Zone function... which makes it similar to a No Date Sub, as I have no intention of unscrewing the pushers to use the chrono... but I could look at the dials on a Daytona all day too :-)

The Sky-Dweller is becoming more and more appealing to me.
