My Apple watch dilemma vs my Rolex Daytona.

Im a huge fan of high end mechanical watches. Ive had many over the years including Rolex, Panerai, Omega, Zenith etc. What I'm am finding is that its harder and harder not to want to wear my AW5. I find the tool so functional and useful. I use the notifications, complications, health metrics etc. Yes its not a piece of high end mechanical jewelry that will last generations and looks nice but the functionality is now almost perfect with he AW5 and it will only get better. The DLC coated Titanium case, with sapphire/ceramic is not too shabby from a materials stand point.

My Daytona 116500LN white is such a beautiful watch and my grail but useless functionality wise as I don't need a watch just to tell time. It's mechanical, collectable, and will last years not to mention one of the hottest watches in the world. Obviously I like it in that respect 1000x more then the AW.

My problem is I'm starting to find the AW a must wear due to its form follows function design. I want to wear the Daytona every day but the AW is far more useful in my day to day life. I can't bring myself to look like a douche and wear one on each arm lol. Right now I can glance at it in any light condition and easily tell the time, temp, timers, messages, notifications, date, GMT, HR. I have 9 complications on the face now that I use everyday.

Its to my understanding that the Swiss watch market is booming and so is the smart watch market but most people I know now are wearing an AW. Are people just buying all these high end mechanicals and saving them only to wear during special occasions or is the Swiss watch industry fudging there sales numbers? Anyone else stuck in this situation? First world problem I know lol.

And no I'm not giving up my Daytona :)

I absolutely love my Apple Watch. I wear it every night to bed to monitor my sleep and heart. It’s also much easier to see at two in the morning. Other than that I’m bothered enough by all the notifications with my iPhone so the last thing I want is a watch beeping and vibrating every 15 seconds. Besides I absolutely love the stunning beauty of my Swiss and German timepieces. To me there’s no comparison. My only suggestion to you would be wear one on each arm but you say that looks like a douche bag so I don’t know what else to say. I’ll buy your Daytona from you.:-)

Wearing the watch actually helps me in a positive way with the notifications. I can't feel them or etc when Im walking with just the phone and I also don't need to take my phone out of my pocket etc to check to see if I have any new messages. I.E. I'm not constantly pulling my phone out of my pocket to check for messages etc. I also mentioned all the useful complications that I use.

I guess it depends on how you feel about tech too. I work in tech and love tech. I would not expect my retired father to give up his Rolex for a AW although the irony is older people benefit the most due to the fall detection and heart monitoring features etc. I can almost guarantee in a few more years most people will wear a Smartwatch over a mechanical. I see it happening now.

I absolutely love tech. I personally own 4 iPhones and three iPads as well as MacBook Pro and a Mac. However I love time, clocks and especially mechanical watches even more. I’m obsessed with it. It’s a terrible obsession because it’s more expensive than drugs. In fact I’m searching the Internet now for a vintage timepiece.

Wear are the Apple watch on your dominant hand / wrist, and the Rolex on the normal wrist.

I feel your pain, the Apple Watch does a lot of things great. I also like the Apple Pay function and the cellular service And I agree they are only getting better. It will be interesting to see where the tech goes.

Yes. That is a bad ass clock. Right now I’m looking for a vintage grandfather clock that was made in Maine in the mid 1700s. Of course it wasn’t called Maine back then but Massachusetts.

I can definitely relate OP. I'm going through the same dilemma right now. I'm committed to losing some weight and improving my health and my AW5 helps me a lot with that.

When I think the amount of money and obsession that goes into mechanical watches I just shake my head.

What band do you have on AW5?

I hear ya. I have the dark gray band that came with it. As boring as they are the sport bands are the most comfortable for me.

our watches have become limited functional jewellery whereas the apple watch and fitbit do so much more. I wear the slim fitbit on my right hand , and watch on my left. problem solved. (I walk 100,000 steps per week.)

I do like mechanical watches, but I find Apple watches very useful, for example for monitoring your walk distance or sleep rhythm.

Then wear your Apple Watch while exercising and sleeping. Mechanical watches the rest of the time. That’s what I do. Problem solved.

I do not like Apple Watches or other cellular linked watches. It is enough that I have a cell phone that I drag everywhere giving others immediate access to me. Even if I don't answer the calls or texts or email. You have one of the most desirable Rolex watches and a classic. I would wear it and carry my phone.

Here is the solution. Throw the Apple Watch out. No, you don’t need it for fitness. We all know if we pushed in the gym or not, and what we consumed. We have a bathroom scale. Two, Watch makes us more wedded to technology like Pavlov’s dogs, because the notification goes off and then the screen will always be too small to do anything, so we pick up the phone. Just as the designers intended. Third, the jury is still out, but there is no long term data on having a device emitting god knows what that close to our skin. It also is more distracting and let’s face it, none of us need more screen time. Lastly another disposable device to charge.

I guess I really can’t speak on it because I do not have an Apple Watch, but I have many friends that do.

My thoughts are that I’m not against technology, I think technology is great overall. However I think becoming overly reliant upon technology is a real issue that effects far to many people nowadays. The Apple Watch can monitor your sleep and heart rate and all that, and has other useful apps as well, but shouldn’t you have some idea of what your heart rate is, how hard you pushed yourself, and how well you slept without a watch telling you. I think this type of technology forces us to think it’s more important than it really is to sell units. The fact that it makes one wonder how they will make it without knowing their heart rate and sleeping and general connectivity is concerning in my opinion. The thousands of years before people could figure out some way of determining this? I think it kind of hampers our thinking overall and rewires our brains in overall not so positive ways.

Personally I have no need or desire for more tech toys and their supposed convenience, as I think it's basically just toys and phony convenience.

BUT if I did have the need for wearing a wrist computer I would, as others have suggested, wear it on your non watch arm and wear your mechanical where God intended it to be worn.

And if you're worried what other people will think of that, do it for a while, and believe me, everyone around you will see it and copy you.

They're just waiting for permission from others to think it's OK for them.

I'm tired of my apple watch bugging me with more depressing news or updates of "go here, do that". That being said I wear it religiously in the morning when I exercise. When I'm at the office I cant get it off my wrist fast enough. The precious, functionality and beauty I get from my Sub suffices for my needs.

I'm about to join you in this. I'll get a fitbit soon for the right wrist and Tudor Submariner for the left.

I used to have that dilemma too but since I can't not to wear a mechanical watch, I decided to go with FitBit wristband - it tracks everything except heartbeat.

Was at breakfast today with a friend who just bought an Apple watch. She is 70 or so years old. She bumped her hand against the door jamb and the phone asked if she was okay and if it needed to call her emergency contact. Pretty friggin cool.

There have been several stories about people being saved because their Apple watches detected a fall or someone was injured in some other way and was able to call for help using their Apple Watch.

I don't wear one (or even use an iphone), but I prefer my dad wear his over any Rolex. I am set as his emergency contact to get notifications if the watch detects anything.

OP, I think it is great that you like your AW. And I would imagine you are in the majority as far as embracing the data connected culture.

However, I have no desire. I get enough info on my phone, my iPad and my MBP's.

Not to worry.

Next year, when the Apple watch is obsolete or they discontinue any support for it, your faithful Rolex will be there, no questions asked.

I think Chester01 made a good point. Granted, the Apple watch is effective as it is but it's not a necessity especially considering its features can be replaced with the pains or muscle effects (for gym) or simply picking up the phone (for phone calls). He is also right about the health concerns too. Well I don't own one, and I just found a reason not to..

Hmmm, looks like I'm the only weirdo that wears a mechanical (left) and electronic (right) wrist.

Been wearing a slim Garmin Vivosport for fitness tracking on my right wrist and mechanical watch for telling time on my left four years now. Have zero desire for an Apple watch or any other one connected constantly with my phone.
