returning to watches from a long hiatus with a ???

basically i left the watch community because of some health issues (& surgeries) and the side effect of the surgeries (or the anesthesia) seems to have wiped quite a bit from my memory "bank".

But was going thru one of my watch drawers, and found a couple of 7928s, a 7016 & a 9411, all re-conditioned & in generally pretty nice shape. Went over to ebay for a quick look at what ebay sellers were asking for those models and nearly had a heart attack.

Are people actually paying those prices or are those sellers on crack hoping a buyer on crack will happen along?

Yeah, no, assuming you're on the level, there was a dramatic price increase in Tudor about 3 years ago, with no current signs of softening.

Well, as usual sellers are asking more than buyers will typically pay.
But yes, there has been a massive price increase.

and for what it's worth, i've already had two PMs asking if i'm going to sell - the answer is yes but not right now. I had a lot of parts or accessories to go with each watch (i've got a 7922/24 watch box that iirc was also used for the 7928s, some hanging tags, and whatever other items. But i need to go thru all my watch files to refresh my memory. When i say surgeries seem to erase long term memories, i ain't joking and i had two surgeries that went 8-9 hours, so the anesthesia was heavy.

I also want to find my watch sale references - I had them (approx 100) in a folder in my email "sent" box, but that folder's empty. I did buy and sell a bit here on this forum, so if anyone still has an email from me with that list, i'd love to have it sent back to me. Otherwise i've got to go thru 2 older computers to see if i can find it

We talked several years back during your last "back to watches".

Sadly, no, some of the prices being asked are reckless and not being sold. But prices are decent (though down 30% from last year)

Hey Larry,

I'm new to the forum but this story made me feel like I had to say hello. Sorry to hear about the anesthesia issues. I'm sure it's frustrating and scary as I watched my dad fight through similar memory problems from health issues. I hope the recovery goes smoothly and keep your chin up because the memory can come back over time if you're lucky. But, it should be nice to come back and see that some history you preserved is being appreciated a bit more financially.



Linesiders, since I can't quote what you said about prices I do have a question.

I'm looking at my first big purchase of a 7928 with a MK I gilt dial. Over the last 6 months I've strangely seen a lot of non-gilt dials posted for near the price of relatively good MK I (although with some issues like service hands). Is that the reckless high pricing you're referring to? Is this a good time to buy or should I wait?

Larryccf, I'm continually reminded that internet communications fail to convey tone. My comment about you being on the level was a shout-out to the many trolls that join our earnest discussions and most assuredly not a personal attack. Yes, it was absolutely possible to miss the meteoric rise in SS Tudor values, it happened very fast. But, without defending myself at all ( I did give benefit of the doubt and a serious, sincere reply to your post), there have been others that have poked that particular bear. So, please be advised, I meant NO disrespect, wish you all the best in terms of recovery, and was not attempting to slur your good name in any way. There was a shocking change and you missed it, through no fault of your own, and now you have an enviable collection to do with as you please. I will endeavor to be yet more mindful in my replies and apologize for any feelings I might have carelessly hurt.

I think the price jump has started to seriously fall. I've seen 3 early 7928s on ebay, actually nice looking orig watches, that i'd put on my "watchlst" have dropped their "Buy it now" price $4,000 to $5,000 on relisting. I guess they found the supply of crack indulging buyers went up in smoke.

Thanks - actually you're talking about most of my drawers. It really didn't start out as a collection, just a watch addict feeding his habit. I took one break from the hobby when i realized i'd bough & sold 72 watches in under 3 years, but that was back when you could find nice buys on the forums "for sale" page

I've been keeping the 2 7928s i've got here wound daily, just to make sure there weren't any issues - I had set them and my Pelagos at the same maybe 12-14 days ago, and just noticed this one is about 2 minutes fast next to the Pelagos. Even if you only said 10 days, 120 seconds divided by 10 days = 12 seconds a day, Not COSC spec but not bad for a 53 year old watch. Jack at IWW serviced this watch about 2010.
