Best First Panerai Watch?

I’m looking to get my first PAM. I’m in between the PAM 560 and the 422. I’m also open to suggestions. I only own Rolex but these PAM models have been singing to me.

I know PAMs don’t hold value as well as Rolex. I plan on buying preowned so I can take less of a hit in case I need to free up cash. Which of these models hold their value best?

I have a small but flat 6” wrist and not sure which would fit best. I love all the potential bands and changing the look of PAMs. Thank you in advance!

I think the 422 is an absolutely fabulous watch and well worth the price it's at on the preowned market.

I absolutely love the 422, and also the 372. But my tiny wrists can only take a 44mm watch unfortunately. Therefore, I would also recommend the 233.

It sounds like a 44mm will fit you better based on your wrist size, but who am I to judge. You can never really tell until you see it in person. That said, you'll find that the 422 has a better finish and feels more refined than the 560. The 422 will be a more popular choice in general, but Panerai has a serious lack of "base" offerings at 44mm in the Luminor 1950s case.

The best Panerai is the one that sings to you. But, it needs to fit and feel comfortable too. Go and try. You’ve got Luminor & Radiomir, Bettarini and 1950 and Radiomir 1940. It might surprise you what actually works.

All the 44mm Luminor 1950 offerings are automatic, have the date, or another complication. I definitely get that they want to limit the 44mm diameter to the Pre-V cases since this was the size they were initially offered in. It would be nice though to get something like the 372 or 422 in the Luminor 1950 case at 44mm.

Panerai 005, 111, 176 are great base options in 44mm. 233 is 44mm but more refined, I love mine. 372, 422 at 47mm are more or a commitment on the wrist. 372 is a special Panerai.

How’s the P5000 movement in terms of reliability?

I was also looking at the P112 with an ETA movement. I love the minimalist look of this dial... Especially as a sandwich dial.

I agree that a 44mm would be best for my wrist. Thanks

My experience with the P5000 movement wasn’t good. It runs real fast when fully wound. It definitely evens out and runs smooth after a day or so, but not before gaining a minute or two in the first 24 hours if you fully wind it. I did a lot of research on this and many others have had a similar experience. Some have sent away their watches to Panerai and they came back still running fast. Personally, I’m staying away from this movement. I have had no issues with any of their 3 day or automatic movements.

I love both Panerai and Rolex. They are different kinds of watches, but they have a lot of shared history. Agree with getting one on the secondary market, at least for now. I’m tempted to pick up a couple more since the prices are so good, and the value is excellent for what you’re getting. Can’t say the same for Rolex presently.
