AP Royal Oak 15500st black dial vs Patek Aquanaut 5167a

Considering picking up one of the two as the only watch in my collection. This would need the watch to be casual, but also dress up when needed. Which would you all choose as the daily watch for you?

For 1 watch? Probably the AP. The Aquanaut leans too casual, while the AP can be dressed down.

Get the AP and order the rubber strap conversion from AP. Best of both worlds.

If you’re really after the flexibility, I say go with the AP, hands down. It really excels for both dress up and dress down.

Now, if your talking the Aquanaut on the bracelet, I say pick the one that sings to you as both could work.

If you’re looking at the tropical straps, my personal philosophy is rubber is not acceptable for professional dress or formal dress. But to each their own.

Didn't even know that was an option! Definitely shifts the watch more casual with the rubber.

The RO is more watch for the money. Much more. But I just like the super low key nature of the 5167. You have to decide if you want to shine or blend in.

I own the 15500 and as much as I love it, I can not see it as an only watch. Although I think it's a much nicer watch than the 5167, I would get the aquanaut as an only watch.

5167/1A. On the bracelet this watch is superb. Legible, understated, water resistant, durable and the low profile works with a suit. Barely know you're wearing it.

Just found out about it myself. Apparently you have to call AP Clearwater and get the kit sent. According to other posts it’s about $700 for the tang buckle and about $1300 for a deployant clasp option. There are a few thread on here with pictures.

The Vacheron Constatin Overseas 4500V.
If you will be switching from strap to bracelet, then the quick change mechanism will be easier and has less potential to scratch the watch in doing so.
With the suggestions above to go with the AP and its rubber/leather strap conversion kit, you will need to use screwdrivers to change from one to the other, and it won’t be a 30 seconds job!
With the 5167, you’ll need a strap change tool (a V fork) to compress the spring bars, which can launch themselves if you’re not careful, thereby having you on your hands and knees wondering how the ****ing thing got all the way over there!
Of all 3 bracelets, the Aquanaut's is the lamest looking – perfectly comfortable and functional, but decidedly average in the aesthetics department.

The VCO shouldn’t be an issue, as like the ’67’s movement, it doesn’t have a hacking feature for the seconds hand when you pull the crown to set the time. A little bit of winding it backwards will stall it until you push the crown back in again.
It also includes the leather and rubber straps, and the deployant clasp, which has a micro-adjust feature to re-size on the fly if/as your wrist swells during the day.

As a single timepiece purchase, it’s the one with the most versatility of the 3 of them (4 or 5 if you also included the cheaper options of the Girard-Perregaux Laureato and Piaget Polo S LE).
In fact, you could have both of those, and never need to bother with changing straps, for less than the price of any of the other 3.

+1 for this.

Get the tang buckle not the deployant clasp though. Cheaper and more comfortable. Maximum versatility for a single watch. You can even splash some color with Rubber B's options at that point as well.

Between the 2, I’d go for 5167a. Although the 15500 is more robust, I find it looks a bit strange w/o automatic on the dial.

*I would consider ss daytona for 1 watch collection.

Ironically this was my great dilemma as I hoped for a 15500 Gray while also having an order in for the 5167a through a friend. I got the call for the AP first

Still hope for the Aquanaut though!

For one watch I'd take the RO, offers more.

Why not just get the 3rd Gen VC overseas?

Not really a fan of the design personally when compared to the other two, but definitely can admire the movement and the easy changing of straps.

Eh, I owned the Patek and it just doesn’t feel that special on the wrist compared to an AP imo

I am a die hard fan of Patek, but in this comparison, I'd go with the RO without hesitation. More versatile piece.

Have both 5167 (rubber and bracelet) and 15400. RO wins on all/most fronts but its a big watch so it realy depends on your wristsize. If its <7.25 i would pick the 5167.

I was in a similar dilemma 2 years ago 15400ST vs 5167a, and I went with the 15400ST. Its more watch for the money, more iconic, more versatile (dress up or down), and pretty much more everything than the 5167a. Also I don't like the 5167a steel bracelet and I wanted the option to swap between the two.

Of course the overseas is another option but I found the watch to wear a bit bulky and top heavy...

Same here. I went for the Black 15400ST then added the rubber strap from AP, then later an alligator strap. AP has lots of options for straps.

I disliked the 5167 on bracelet, and the APRO bracelet is so beautiful.

AP Royal Oak 15500st black dial vs Patek Aquanaut 5167a

You have to try them both on.

The Aqua just didn’t do anything for me in person, just not enough going on with the dial and that big flat bezel wasn’t anywhere near as appealing as the more complex and intricate RO design.

Could be it’s the reverse for you. So try before you buy and go for what you like.

Oh and also bear in mind the rubber strap length is fixed on the PP - so if your wrist changes size a lot then don’t have the option to tighten or loosen a notch as per the AP rubber strap.

Bias here. Would do the AP 15500 over the 5167a, love the AP bracelet! However, would do the 5164a over 15500 any day.

I have the black 15400 and the 5167. If I had to pick only one, it would certainly be the Patek. Get it with bracelet and rubber if you want both options. I like the size and the look better.

I rarely dress up, but I would pick the 5167 over the 15400 in a dressy situation (on bracelet or rubber).

Can you please kindly provide some information about the Rubber strap conversion from AP? Any link or photo will be highly appreciated.
