I'm kind of confused about this, too.

I was told not to change the time on my DD within 3 hours of midnight, as the Day Date takes 3 hours to flip the... day and date.

You're probably thinking about the quickset date function. When changing the date, the date wheel mechanism could be damaged if the date is manually changed during the period from 10:00 to 2:00. I usually advance the hands to 6:00a (crown position 3) and use the quickset date (crown position 2) to set the date and then advance the hands again (crown position 3) to the correct time.

There are many watches that engage date changing gears a few hours before 12 and a few hours after. The Zenith El Primero chrono movement in a Concord I have is an example where the prohibition is noted in the directions. As a result, there is a common misperception that you should not change dates +- 4 hours of midnight on ANY watch.
This restriction doesn't apply to the DDS and other modern Rolex models. So while you have no worries, it's always a good idea to understand what you have in your hand before you start playing around with it. If I had to set a watch I didn't clearly understand, I'd set the date to the day prior with the watch set around midday and then wind it to the right date and time.

Just a bit of context for you.

Agreed, I always set the date a day before and manually wind the watch into the next day.

Haha! I agree.
They have a quickset date corrector wheel (in orange). This will accommodate for the date driving wheels position. When the date is changed it relieves angle of the cam (anti-clockwise)(red).
From what I've been reading this should be no problem.

The quickset models of the Rolex movements have no issues when setting date/time.

Any Rolex watch made since the mid-1970's can be set at any time of the day or night..

It is the way they are designed.

This is not true of other manufacturers (such as Omega), so check your Owners manuals..

Never thought this would be a problem. I have always just set time and date on my 1675 whenever it needed it.

Thanks

Again you learn something new everyday.
