AD relationship priorities?

Hi folks,
Noob looking for guidance.

Will a jeweler AD value spent $ amount over number of purchases?

I.e buy multiple run of the mill SS + TT vs a single higher value PM

Cheers,

No one truly knows. All ADs operate independently so there isn’t a definitive answer.

Most large ADs i dealt with value $, but hard to get SS pieces will not add on to $$ spent there because "I can sell this watch to anyone"... ex: buy PM dd to get a SS gmt, they will only count the DD and the gmt will be your "luck".

its like a crapshoot nowadays with dealers getting reduced, the few I have worked with are all no longer ADs so I'd say spend a lot and fast and hope they can get you what you want :)

Be a good, friendly customer and don't expect to have the red carpet rolled out every time you make an entrance.

Also, be respectful in your interactions with staff and above all, don't act like you're the "king of Arabi."

Do all that and spend some money on stuff you would buy anyway and they may come to appreciate your visits and maybe, just maybe, they will remember you when they want to move a piece that isn't selling as fast as they want.

All this AD relationship stuff only exists mainly on internet forums.

From a business point of view, your AD should value a relationship developed with 2 tone anything and Cellini.

I respectfully disagree. Relationships matter in all business and beyond that, in all walks of life.

My local coffeehouse is in business only to sell coffee and make money. But they value their customers and their punchcard that has “buy 10, get one free” is proof of that. When I sent over a friend, they gave me a free scone my next visit. Yes this is not the same but imagine if the coffee guys do this, what about jewelers?

Saying the relationship doesn’t matter simply sends out false hope.

Amen.

My dignity is worth more than a couple bucks. I'm not sucking up to some salesman in order to get some unnecessary ornament.

If you buy the shit they require (solid yellow gold models and the sort) you will end up losing more money, and what's more important, time, anyway.

Relationships are present in dealing with AD's but they are in business to make money. They will typically be respectful as it is good business and customers will typically be the same. If you want a hot watch from your AD you are either going to be very lucky or have spent some money with them. Without knowing the behind the scenes of a specific AD you are only left to speculate. I do a lot of business with my AD and refer a lot of clients. They always take care of me but I typically do not do a lot of new Rolex business with them as I like to move my watches around and they are sensitive to selling or flipping models purchased through them. I don't mind buying Grey and enjoying the ownership experience on my terms. If my AD closed I would not have a relationship with a new one at this level. Too much time to develop.

I don’t think you can assume every AD or every SA is the same ..... so while one AD May just care how much $ you spend in a year, another AD may look at not just overall spend , but consistently , frequency, length of “relationship”, are you local, are you nice, are you a WIS, are you a family man with kids to pass watches down to, is your profession recession-proof, are you younger with an upward spend trajectory , etc etc.

If you are going into a new AD it’s impossible to know these things of course , so at the end of the day it may be a crap shoot .

This is a good analogy .

Why do these questions remind me so much of soap operas? All this relationship talk..... like it's "Days of Our Life" or "The Young and The Restless"....?

That’s fair point.

I found where the person I worked with went and luckily they are still with a Rolex dealer so I will continue to buy from them as they were great, not sure if that would mean anything as it is a new place for them and I am sure that place has established customers already

Solid yellow gold models are doing very well right now. Seems the green dial Daytona is a real hit as are the broken Romans DD-40s.
