Does This Make Me a Bad Person

HI needs some thoughts from my fellow TRF'ers! Since obtaining my 16618ln about 8 months ago, it has happily become my daily drive. It has left my Sub C 114060 sitting in the watchbox. I am seriously considering moving my Sub C on and unlocking its value , which is almost double what I paid. This thread is not a "should I sell my Sub C" debate though.

If I move on the Sub C I will most likely replace it with either dressier Rolex or something in the high end range from a different brand. My question isnt about what "high end" watch to buy though either.

Here is the question, I know if I execute this plan I will want to buy an affordable diver. I was thinking of something very affordable, like an Orient Mako etc, something for a few hundred dollars to wear the very odd time I wont want to wear the gold sub or the Sub C replacement, (annual ice fishing trip with the boys, deer hunting etc.)whatever that may be. Anyhow I really like the look of the Steinhart Ocean One Vintage! (pic below) I am told that it is a homage to a vintage Rolex Red Sub. I have no interest in pretending to own a vintage Rolex, (I have owned several other models besides my current) I just like the look of this diver.

Does this make me a bad person if I grab one for a few hundred bucks? Am I poser with a homage watch betraying the brand I love?

Yarg not a Steinhart Ocean One to replace a Sub. Agree on cashing out but a Steinhart Ocean One... Oof. A gold Sub and a double red Ocean One. Yes. You are a bad person. Terrible in fact and should get a Seiko or Tissot or something.

Nope, you do you. Anyone interested can easily read the brand on the face, see the S-logo.

Good thing about that one, if you ever get into a scrap you can use those pointy crown guards as a weapon.

I like them. Very well made, but not a few hundred anymore. Prepare to pay over$500.00 for that.

It doesn't make you a bad person. Your money, your choice, your watch.

I bought a Steinhart 39mm GMT Pepsi last year as a travel beater. It is the biggest POS I have ever paid money for. It couldn't keep time but because I has removed the stickers they wouldn't refund. The bezel is a nail breaker. The clasp is a flesh gouger. It is not comfortable and it still doesn't keep good time although it was sent back for regulation.

I've been meaning to do a video for YouTube of my smashing it to bits with a lump hammer. I will get around to it. This doesn't make me a bad person. My money, my choice, my POS watch.

Take another Steinhart, that's not a Rolex copy, for example the Ocean GMT Titanium

Understand your dilemma.

Whether or not buying a copy of the sub makes you a "bad person" is really beyond the scope of a thread.

But personally, "homage" watches don't sit right with me, and I would not feel comfortable wearing what in my opinion is a copy of a sub.

That's why I have a cheap Casio dive watch for when I don't want to wear a nice watch. $20 and not even remotely mistakable for a sub.

Stay safe.

Who cares what anybody thinks of you.
Buy watches you like and will wear.

Personally, I would spend my money on a Seiko for a cheap daily wearer. So many nice divers in the range to choose from imo

Actually I would recommend that too... an SKX... cheap watch that has some street cred in my opinion.

I'd go as far as granting it's a darn good $250 watch with forum fanboy cred. I'd suggest going up several significant notches of refinement to a $6-800 Seiko Prospex if the watch is a stand in for a Rolex.

Seiko 5. Or Tissot. Or micro brand.

Anything but an homage with fautina and the Mercedes hand.

Seiko is great and has a wonderful history. Can’t go wrong.

Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Dive Watch.

CountyComm SR-35 Titanium

Seriously, anything but that awful homage.

Thanks been thinking of that as well. Unfortunately the SKX is too expensive now since it was discontinued. I have an AD near me that sells the Prospex automatics though. Will have a look.

As far as wearing a watch that looks like it could be mistaken for a Rolex, I wouldn't sweat it. This isn't the first time a Rolex diver was copied and won't be the last - it's successful because it's a great design after all.

I do like the idea of affordable diver alternatives from brands where the reputation for quality/durability/value are well-appreciated in that category like Seiko, as has been suggested

P.S. Love that 16618LN

I prefer to go into watches that aren’t trying to be something they aren’t. I’d look at a Seiko skx. Although discontinued, you can pick them up fir around 300 USF and they have their own cult following.

Wow mine (42mm Pepsi)was the complete opposite. Bezel had good action and my clasp is easy to open and close. I also bought it as a travel beater for those places that I didn't feel comfortable traveling with my Rolex.

SKX007 was my first automatic watch so I hold it near and dear to my heart. It also came along for a few month travel sabbatical my wife and I did last year as I didn't want to bring something flashier traveling through some parts of South America, etc..

Since the SKX007 -- it's been a slippery slope going to Tudor, Panerai, Rolex and AP

Thumbs up from me on this suggestion!

Interesting thread.

Of course, it all really depends upon how you'll feel wearing it. If every time you look at the watch you'll think "boy, I really love the way this watch looks", then go for it. But, if every time you look at it you feel bad because you bought a knock-off watch (sorry, that Steinhardt is not what I call an "homage" watch), whether it's because you have respect for the brand, or feel like (or are worried someone else might think you are) a poseur, then there's your answer.

Ironically, even if you had the real vintage Rolex, you'd never-ever wear it as a knock-around, so you'd still be in the same situation.

As for me, I'd probably, exactly as many have said above, go for a Seiko Turtle, or something from a similar brand that has made it's name being exactly the kind of watch you are looking for- a reliable, affordable diver. (My "knock-around" diver is an Oris Divers 65, and I bought my nephew a Turtle last year.)

Ok looking online for an SKX. I am in Canada. I want a 42 mm version on a bracelet. Nothing on Amazon. Chrono24 has some dealers but they are overseas. Any suggestions on where to look, preferably in North America.?

It doesn’t make you a bad person, but don’t do it. Get a Seiko SKX and you’ll have a watch that you can be proud of.
