AD discount (not on Rolex) question

So my AD was introduced to me through a friend and delivered a stainless steel SkyD in relatively short order order (8 months or so) as my first purchase.

I'm planning on buying another brand (JLC) from them which typically can be discounted. But they also have me on the waitlist for a BLRO and Daytona.

I kind of feel weird asking for a discount given the level of service and priority they've given me. Am I thinking about this the wrong way?

I see your point. On one hand if a watch is discountable you should try and get it. On the other hand getting a hard to get watch is more than any discount.

I’d tentatively ask but wouldn’t push it. No harm done then.

What JLC are you buying?

I was considering buying a JLC from an AD to get me in the door but alas it was only available through the JLC boutique.

I love JLC but you’re crazy to pay retail on that. You’re going to take a bath the second you walk out the door. Depending on the model, you could be talking $5k easy, which then makes you ask why not just buy the BLRO grey (as much as I hate saying that).

I suppose I could ask, but I'd hope it doesn't come across poorly given I appreciate how they've delivered for me thus far. Even with the BLRO, the wait time I was told is much less than what I've seen on here.

This, this this.

You didn’t come out ahead if you overpaid for something else.

In many industries, you provide to your sales people what I will call here as “discount allowance” (DA).

Each year when the executive office plans the budget, a portion of it is allocated to this DA, and is then consumed by the representatives, within their limits. Most companies will have this as a functional KPI, where the percentage against total sales must stay within target range.

Depending on the company and the architecture of its structure cost, and performance resolution capabilities, it will know how profitable an item is (not as easy at it seems).

Add the two and you can then map how deep a discount can be done for each model, cognizant of its profitability.

So now we have items which can be discounted by the sales people, who must balance their target in sales and DA (underspent is not always desirable). Asking for a discount might not be intuitive, but the limit of it has already been considered by the parent company, meaning you should always ask for one. If you don’t ask for a discount, the DA amount will go to another customer.

A sales representative may use this at its own discretion, to either close a sale, build loyalty to a new customer (can be dangerous to start a relation with a discount, because they become an expectation instead of a one-of), or push for highly profitable models.

In short: a no is always free, whereas not asking costs money.

There is never any harm in asking for a discount, as long as it is done politely. You'll never know if you don't ask! They would have to be pretty petty to bump you on the waitlist for the others just for asking. You might even preface it with "I know for rolex that there are no discounts but I'm unaware of the market for JLC, is there any wiggle room"

I would try and bundle the JLC at retail with one of the Rolexes.

Thanks to all for your comments here. I'm going to go w/ a polite ask, but I'm probably going to accept the first number they give me.

In the grand scheme, I think the relationship/priority access I've been given (without prior purchase history b4 the SkyD) is worth more than getting a 15% discount over a 10% discount.

I really don't know, but in my eyes, buying a JLC from the same AD (even while asking for a discount) would make you an even more desirable customer. It would be yet another sale; one they could make right away, and it shows that you are a serious buyer.

I would ask for the discount.

This and you’re helping them by buying a watch that is not in demand.

No harm in asking for a discount on anything as there are possible two answers yes or no its that simple

Don't pay msrp for the JLC. Stay ahead of the game. It's about you not them. No matter how much discount you get on any watch purchase their still making money.

I’d tell them you want the JLC. Casually try and imply you are willing to wait if it can arrive with a partner. See if they offer a discount or hint at where you would stand if you wait it out.

If you buy without a discount it shows your loyalty to your AD. But it also shows them that they have you hooked. What’s in it for them to drop you a few spots on the other lists, they know you’re gonna wait it out patiently and they could bump someone else up and get a larger bundle from them. At least that what would run through my mind if I were your SA.

You're a dream for anyone in the retail business or any other business.....just pay whatever the seller is asking because you're worried about offending them. God, I wish I had customers like you back in the day!!

I would shop the JLC with competing AD's, locally & not locally. If you can get a decent discount from a competing AD, i would go that route instead of spending more to gain the relationship with the AD

I'm not sure if JLC AD's can ship out of state, but i received some of my other watches from out of state AD's with great discounts

I'm not sure I would. I do love that watch, and I would buy it at the same AD. If they offer a discount, take it.

Ended up getting what I wanted and it was discounted 10% without me needing to ask. I could’ve bargained for more, but I didn’t feel the compulsion.

Beautiful watch, glad you got a discount!

I did ask for and get a discount on a non-Rolex from the AD that I got my Rolex from, it's extra business for them (and importantly cash flow) and as long as you're not pushy I'm sure most would be happy to oblige, especially in this economic climate.

If you make it obvious that you want a JLC then they may not be discount friendly no matter who you are. just go in at the end of the month and say you're having a look around. be prepared when you ask for the price just say how about ? Give them your $ specific price on the piece. When they refuse just say you have more shopping or errands to do call me if we can get this price and I will buy today, and leave.

OP, beautiful watch. I believe that is a silver dial but looks more white in the pic. Can you confirm?
