111 versus 88 HELP!

Narrowed it down to two . . .

The face of the 88 is my favorite on a PAM. However, I adore the exhibition back of the 111. I cannot tell you how torn I am between the two watches. The 88 commands my attention when looking at it--no doubt. However, I am intrigued by the 111 because I truly enjoy taking a watch off the wrist and gazing at the movement (even though--in this case--I know it is an ETA movement not worth much more than a $100). I am soooooo torn. This will, I believe for now, be my only PAM for a couple, maybe three, years.

Help me decide, PLEASE!

Which one and why?

Both is GREAT!!! Hard to decide between 'em.
But for your first Pannie, I think you must consider 111.
I like the sandwich dial, Historic model, simple, classy & beautiful!!!
This is the REAL Panerai to me. My first love.
Good luck for whatever you choose.

Can't go wrong with either. But for me, the 111 is what Panerai is all about.

Well,...both are fantastic pieces. I love the sandwich dial of the 111, but the 88 is a GMT and I have this "problem "with GMTs.

Well, it is up to you.

The 111 is like the Submariner of the Rolex line! Everyone owns one at one time or the other!

I think the 88 is ok, but the 111 is so so so good.

For a 24 hr GMT, I prefer other models a lot more, like the 116710LN.

IMO looking at the back of the watch will wear off quickly. You will take it off at night after wearing it all day and put it to rest without giving it a second look.

The 88 is a piece of art..

i went with the 88 and am glad I did.

My next is the 127

if i'm going to jump into the darkside it will definitely be the 88. if there is one thing that turns me off panerai it's the simplicity of it but the 88 has my type of complication

To me it depends on your collection. I prefer the automatics for daily ease of use and the manual winds for once in a while. I have some of the manual winds (50-60 hrs) models with the crown guards and have found winding to be annoying. With the 8 days or rads a different story.

I find winding my 111,a religeous experience !!

Just keep the finger away from the polished bezel. The manual RADs like the 231,is just so much easier to wind.

Both are great watches, the 88 was my first love but the 111 is a true classic.

Go with the 111

I have to say 111, the 88 is great but the sub dial in white just doesnt do it for me, I wish it was black and then I would be buying one straight away.

The 88 is unique and a very practical watch. The 111 has sandwich dial with manual wind. This is the problem with Panerai you cant just buy one. I personally do not own a 111 and cannot remember the last time I wore my 88. My 233/268/289 with the 8 day mvmt have me spoiled regarding manual winding watches and to many others to choose from as far as autos are concerned. If it is the only watch you will buy and not add any others it would be tough to pass up the 111 otherwise would get the 88.

The silver subdial and the skeleton hands,do not do it for me.Although,I did see the version with the bracelet and as a whole that looked very nice !!!

The 88 without the silver subdial, does exist, called "The Ghost".Saw one on CM for sale a few weeks ago.Looks nice !!!
