Do I get on a waitlist for an Explorer now or wait to see if they "upgrade" it.
Hi guys.
Bit of a first world problem here. My very modest but special to me collection consists of these watches: Casio Royale World Timer, Seiko white dial dress watch (my grandad's watch), my modified Seiko SKX and my lovely Black Ceramic Bezel Omega Seamaster. I have known for a long time the next big watch purchase for me will be an Explorer 214270. The dial sings to me, when I see it in a video or a pic on here, the dial looks perfect. I was in Watchfinder (window shopping) a while ago and amongst all of the GMT's, Subs, ceramic bezels and cyclops, was the perfect SS watch. The Explorer. I have a love of travelling and the sea so my taste in watches has taken a certain path. I am now in a bit of a dilemma though. I have been keeping an eye on ebay and Chrono24, the 214270 is going quite well in the secondary market. Only yesterday a new one sold for £5,650. That's an increase of £450 above retail. Now, while the used value of the watch is not a concern for me. I am starting to wonder if the rumour mill of Rolex releasing a new Explorer in 2021 (the line's 50th Anni) is starting to make sense. IF they increase the size to 41mm, which after their decision to do the same with the OP line, is quite possible. I feel this watch will no longer suit me. As I think it will be too big for my wrists and it might ruin the beauty of the dial. I think a lot of people are starting to get worried about the same issue, hence the price increases on the secondary market. Of course I would be interested in the longer power reserve but it's not that important to me. I wear different watches during the day and night so having the two day power reserve wouldn't really bother me. What would you do? Ideally, I wouldn't of bought my first Rolex for maybe another year but this is maybe forcing my hand. Would you wait and hope they don't drasitically change the model or take the plunge now? Thanks for listening. |
