2 weeks of SDDS and more remarks then years of 116520

Hi Guys ,
I just wanted to add after my little run in with the "ignoramus" Rolex wearing clogs in France yesterday at lunch. That so far I have had more people making remarks about my SDDS in two weeks then the years I have been wearing first a 16520 (more rare at the time then) and the 116520 I'm wearing now .
But unfortunately I have not really had any nice things said about it .
My best friend wanted to know if I was planning to keep gold fish in it , and when I explained to another friend what the watch is capable to do ( 3900 M and over , blabla ) he asked if the coucou ( bird ) that should come out every hours could withstand the water pressure too.
My own wife made the remark that I should only wear the watch with sporty shirts / sweatshirts as she has noticed that the watch " hooks " on my shirts I wear to the office .
Last week I walked in at my local AD , we get along pretty well or should I say got as I made the mistake to show him the SDDS that I didn't buy with him as he didn't have one available and even if he had ,he couldn't do me the nearly 20% less that it cost me 250 km down the road in Spain . So his reaction was " nice " and went into the back to make a very long phone call .
So far nobody around me has said " great watch " well at least I got some nice remarks from you guys when I posted some pictures the day I got it.
By the way I'm still peeling of plastic ... how much is on there ????
I LOVE THE WATCH MORE BY THE DAY !!!!!

They're both without cyclops, very understated and elegant. My favourite pair would be my 16600 Seadweller which is discontinued and the 116520 Daytona which is just sleek and rare. (maybe not anymore). But they're both my absolute favourite in the Rolex line.

No offense, but it kind of sounds like you purchased this watch EXPECTING to get a bunch of people to notice/compliment it...then when that didn't pan out, it seems like it's been a downer for ya. So what?

I haven't taken my DS off for my 6+ months of ownership and can name the amount of times it's been noticed/complimented - that being ZERO. Well, maybe it has been noticed, but nobody has said a thing. And you know what...I could care less! I didn't buy this watch for other people and I sure don't care what others say or how they react. To be honest, I prefer nobody notices/comments as I don't really like talking about my watches with complete strangers I run into around town.

I think you're looking at it all wrong...embrace the lack of attention and snide comments...embrace them like a badge of honor. IMO comments like the ones you pointed out say more about the person talking than anything coming out of their mouth.

x2....I actually like being stealth with my watches. I don't expect people to say anything. I'm just a guy that likes Rolex watches (and others). IMO if your the type to spend time making snide remarks about where I spend my hard earned cash, well...so be it. Just don't expect me to be hanging out with you much after that.

On a side note, I'm the sleeper guy that knows well above what most people (non members of TRF) about Rolex. If anyone I don't know approaches me and says "nice watch", I'm the guy that just says thanks. That is unless you follow up with asking me if I know of TRF, then we'll sit and talk watches all day.

Hi , No offence taken at all ,
Don't get me wrong , I not at all after compliments . I was just pointing out that the SDDS gets at lot of attention ( Ok it is bigger then average ) I have 3 other Rolex watches and none of them got any attention and I'm quite happy with . But , strangely all the remarks I have got from the SDDS have been somewhere "negative" or naively sarcastic . Not that it bothers me in any way , I bought the watch because I'm impressed with its technical properties . I like the watch better everyday , I no longer find it massive like on the first day .

Nice twosome my man. Forget the funny comments and carry on wearing with pride albeit with extra wide cuffs to accommodate the beast that is the DSSD...

Understood...I get it now, sometimes a little tough to pick up nuances via email/forum posts. I've found in the past with numerous topics that 99% of the time the guys making sarcastic comments know absolutely nothing about what they are making a comment on. Kind of like the guy that sees a vintage Sub that obviously shows it's age yet a very rare beast & comments, "Nice beat-up, scratched ancient watch. That thing has seen better days...why not spend a few dollars and buy a new watch like my nice & shinny Breitling!"

You do have a point there
Vintage or classic or collectbles have to be rare pieces , completly original and in prestine condition , or it is a you sat just an old watch . better off with a nice and new one .
Its like the other day , we sat in a traffic jam because they had organised a "classic car " gathering . I could not believe what I saw , most of those cars 20 or 30 years ago you wouldn't dare to own up that you drove one of those , now they act as they are driving original ferrari 250 GTO or Bugatti's .
A joke

Hey now...don't be too hard on us 'classic car' lovers. While I was not around when these cars were built (I'm 32), I am a die-hard classic car buff. Just like my watches, I don't really care what people think...I own & drive these because I love them. While these are by no means on the level of 250 GTOs or Bugatti's, I still get a blast driving them (and heck, they sure are a lot more affordable ):

Interesting post Yves, because my experience in the 3 days I've been wearing the SDDS is the exact opposite! I have three friends who have seen the watch and are now determined to buy one for themselves, including one who is thinking of selling his Sub LV to finance the purchase and another who has started selling several old, low-priced watches (including an Omega) to also help pay for an SDDS.

You guessed it -these friends are all watch lovers/collectors. So I'm thinking maybe people who know about or love watches would be more likely to appreciate the SDDS or at least recognise its features, while those who aren't interested in watches are more likely not to like it?

PS Moby33 - fantastic car collection!

Hi ,
WOW , great looking cars .
What I ment was that I do not mind sitting in a traffic jam because there are classic cars going past as long they look like yours , I was on about things like DAF's ( just some info , these things were thank god never allowed in the states . Dutch car and truck manufacture , ugly little thing that would drive as fast forward as in reverse because of a gearbox called variomatic ) Trabant ( east german car company , the bits fall off as you along ) Volga ( USSR ) don't even mention it ...
I respect everybody"s past time and only applaud the passion that go with it ... but some take it a bit to the ridiculous .
By the way love the corvette , I lived in L.A ( Pasific Pallisades ) from 1984 till end 1985 . We took back a 57 chevy two tone paint job . We did have a job to get it imported in Belgium , I lost it because of my fathers sudden death and as it was in his name his second wife got her paws on it along with plenty of other stuff . I still have a Porsche 356C super90 in the garage in my mums place in Portugal . The engine blew up on the Estoril race track as every other saturday classic cars could use the track ( 1991 -1994) The poor thing is rusting away since , I should have it repaired but the estimate exceeds its commercial value . Better off buying another one .
I'd love a Porsche RS 2.7 ( mid 70's ) but as always ... nothing is too expensive its only us not making enough money ...

No I don't want your Breitling

But I do want your GTO but then again it looks so long, you must need to find 2 parking spaces to park it....on second thought hand over the Corvette

Hi Singslinger
Hope you no longer blame me for "pushing" you into buying the SDDS ,
Great you get nice compliments about the watch from your friends , you obviously have friends with good taste and knowledge . mine are great friends but have no clue about watches .. anyway I don't give chicken sh.. what they think about my watch . I love it.
