Vintage sub dial
Hi Fellow watch enthusiasts,
Longtime member with a question. I finally managed to get a YG sub. A gold Rolex was a grail and something I thought would be unobtainable due to price. I purchased an L series sub from aprox 1989 because it was beautiful and "almost" affordable. I had not noticed the dial "patina" when I purchased it probably due to the lighting. But in certain light, it almost looks dirty inside, like the crystal isnt clear or has fine scratches. I may not be describing it well. I took it back where I bought it and he looked at it with a loop. He said its the dial patina and suggested I don't change it as it will hurt the value of the watch. However, since it is my first and only gold rolex, I want to enjoy the beauty of gold rolex without it looking old and beat up and sometimes feel the dial is taking away from the beauty. He has offered to change out the dial and bezel and let me keep the old ones in case I ever want to sell the watch as vintage. But that will also cost about 500 USD. I am assuming that the dial and bezel will be aftermarket because Rolex USA would keep the old dial and bezel correct? In sunlight, the dial has that purple color in the starburst. That said , in certain light , my blue dial has that deep blue color and looks beautiful. I would sincerely appreciate your thoughts on this.

The color change dials are desirable - particularly that purple hue.
I would not bother with it unless you found a NOS dial (ebay for example) and kept the old.

While the purple is appealing, the gritty, gravelly texture on the dial (that you can see in that last shot) is pretty rough. I suppose some could overlook it, but I know it would bother me every time I saw it. If that’s the case for you, just know it’s not going to get better, and when you want to sell it, it will be an issue.

Why you're "assuming" the replacement dial and insert would be aftermarket? Just ask the seller, he may have a good one sitting there, there are plenty original dials around.
If is not original then don't bother, your dial is not that bad |
