Still waiting since launch...? UK

As the title suggests, who’s been waiting for their grail piece for 4+ years and more.
I’ve personally been waiting for a DaytonaC since 2016, even with a decent purchase history.

I guess your definition of “decent” doesn’t align with your AD’s definition. I feel for you my friend. 4 years ago could have bought grey at less than 20k.

I can’t figure it out either. I’ve been waiting for years for the YG green dial Daytona, promised to me by my AD the next one is mine and now Paul Thorpe says it’s to be discontinued. Disconcerting to say the least...

With Rolex watches it really is the case that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. You can buy a hot watch now at 2x MSRP, or have twice as many watches by being patient. Only downside is the risk that one is discontinued or otherwise becomes unattainable while waiting.

4+ years, I’d be voicing my dissatisfaction to that AD and threaten to take my dollars elsewhere, especially if they discontinue it. On a plus, there’s a possibility that Rolex ships what they have left if they are discontinuing, and hopefully your AD gets one for you. And hopefully if you choose to say something, they make sure if they get one it’s yours.

Good luck!!

I hear you and completely understand your frustration! Don't go grey it's a rip off. Move to another brand and don't look back.

It's like waiting for that one girl that doesn't give you the time of day. At the time it seems like she's the only one in the world that will do, but once you get away from the situation you'll realize that there are a lot of other fish in the sea! Lots of great watches out there that you may even like better than a Daytona C.

I can't wait for the hype to die down. I can easily afford the grey price but there is no way in hell I would pay it.

Hello all. As a prospective first time Rolex buyer I now have the funds for my first Rolex. I'm going for the 36mm Perpetual in Silver. .I'd spend a long time contemplating the Wimbledon Green, but now have my heart set on the Silver with the Sunray dial. The gold hands and the yellow accents set it off and it just makes me drool. I'm in the UK so have mailed several AD's to register an interest and they have all been a bit cagey. The store in the UK open April 12th and I'm just praying one of them will give me the nod.

God, the anticipation is killing me.

Having been in a similar situation as yourself I know how you feel. I managed to get hold of one eventually and was in love with it for a couple of weeks then after a couple of months I thought that the watch was actually too "jewellery" looking for me due to the polished bracelet etc.... Its a shame you can't actually see and try the watches on anymore before you order them but believe me don't believe all the hype. I now have a speedmaster Pro and after 2 years I've just ordered the 3861 Speedmaster (new watch no waiting time) and couldn't be happier. There are plenty of watches out there that are just as good but without the hype.

Always divides opinions, me personally i just buy what i want on the secondary market. I cannot fathom waiting 4 years to wear a watch, to be honest with rolex price increases and the way the secondary market continues to move up with no sign of it slowing down the quicker you do buy the better.

4 years ago a friend of mine bought a SS ceramic Daytona for £14,000 from Watch Finder.

At the time I told him he was mad....

Now he never fails to remind me of that conversation at every given opportunity!

Sorry, at this point I would suggest consider going Gray, or you may never get it. I know it is expensive, but after four years....

Well, here is wishing you the best and hoping you get the call tomorrow!!!!!

AD’s should perhaps make their waiting lists transparent, so you can actually see yourself in the pecking order, and confirm that no one is jumping ahead of you.

A top flight customer will always know their pecking order.

I feel for the OP who hankers to own the Daytona. I haven't had to wait as long as you, but the 18months for my Pepsi was long enough and ironically, that is the longest wait I have had for any Rolex, including a SS Black Daytona.

Thanks all for your kind responses and comments. I’d say 8 pieces which includes 2 PMs is pretty decent but some may say differently.
In some respects I guess it’s a case of pot luck with a DaytonaC - everyone’s AD experience is different but it’s just annoying when an AD states we will deliver, to ‘we can’t guarantee’ it makes you think...

All the best to you all in your journeys !

I seem to be having the same issue with my local dealer, even with history they kept giving my stupid stories of "all stainless watches get put into the window so 1st come 1st serve" then a friend of mine in the past month get a new stainless piece from them with 0 history and a minimal wait. Seems its if your face fits or how deep they think your pockets go. Its a joke

It is very strange and each individual is treated differently. I have no issues with SS pieces or PM.. it’s specifically the DaytonaC

Best of luck to you pal,

It also depends on the AD's clientele and surrounding area. I have a friend like you who has spent similar at WoS group in central London and has most of the hot SS except for the daytona and it really annoys him!

I feel very lucky that my AD (outside of london) seems to allocate to me in a fair time. Here is the time line for the last Rolex purchased:
BLRO-18months, WG Oysterflex Daytona-3months, SkyD Black SS-3weeks, TT SD43-offered to me upon release, SS No Date-5months, TT CHNR-12months....

It is far more than decent. That’s a pretty solid purchase portfolio.

The problem though is your location. I am not sure where in the UK you are at, but I know several European cities (eg London, Paris) where getting certain references is very hard. Not because the ADs do not receive them, but rather that there are many people with lots of disposable income competing with you.

For example, take London. The wealth concentration is quite immense, and considering a Daytona is relatively affordable AND has high demand, getting one from the AD would be difficult. Since there would be a line of people able to buy £350,000 watches seeking to buy a merely £9,000 watch!

Thus, while you have a pretty solid purchase history, you are likely in competition with people that on a single visit can drop several hundred thousand on Jewerly for themselves/their spouse. Which means they are likely to be higher up on the AD’s ‘allocation list’ (allocation list is definitely more accurate than ‘wait list’).

What to do then?

Well, if you travel a lot, I would recommend developing a relationship with an AD in a smaller city. Preferably outside Europe or Asia.

In an AD in Nairobi (unfortunately no longer there) my first visit I had a choice of a 116710BLNR, 116710LN, a Sub and a Sub Date. Not to mention all three versions of Milgaus.

Second visit there was a Daytona Black and a LVc (and apparently a Blue SkyDweller in the safe, although I never saw it).

Last visit there was a DSSD JC and a SS43.

That would be literally IMPOSSIBLE in London.

While in my primary city of Nairobi there are people with funds to buy watches and more, it is nowhere close to London where every street has a Ferrari in every driveway and a peacock in every pot! Where people keep apartments and midget submarines as pets.

And where a £9,000 watch is ridiculously affordable considering it’s popularity, and with a growing base of demand that can afford significantly more expensive time pieces.

My advice would be to develop a relationship with an AD in a less frenetic geography, or just to go and buy from the grey market (please ensure it’s genuine - one reason I always buy from an AD is I am too softhearted to ever risk grey. But I’m sure there are ‘trusted sellers’ who have too much to lose by being silly).

Or, and I mean it, go to your local AD and make him a friend. You’d be surprised how successful that can be. Good people do good things to good people, and if you and your AD can strike a rapport you may be surprised at how quickly a Daytona can show up.

But your purchase history, as good as it is, is unfortunately not at all special in many of the larger cities of Europe. Cities where it’s not just the local rich but also international rich that go there, with London being the capital city of the World (sorry New York).

Depends what are the 6 pieces you got. If they were all steel sports in demand models then that won't help you much, even if only 4 were top in demand steel Rolex the AD would think he made right by you especially in London. Would you mind telling us what the 8 were.

3 years ago I was told with a purchase of a DD 40, the AD could allocate me Daytona C sometime in the future. I am told now, that offer no longer stands and the bundle count has gone up.

Best of luck to you pal,
I know, I've sent them an email to put my point across and received a reply which tiptoed around the issues that I put across. Time will tell if they value me as a repeat customer or not i guess. If I'm not and I find others are still being jumped above me on the list I will certainly be letting it known. thanks for the good luck wishes, fingers crossed!!!!
