You don’t have pull out speaker magnets.  Just forget your Rolex in the same pocket as your iPhone for a day, that is a current day example. Bullet proof Rolex now Airsoft proof. A cooked real deal that is highly recognizable but now airsoft proof.
Does anybody keep their Rolex in a pocket for a day?

In the same pocket as your iPhone?

Or any watch for that matter, with any phone.

I was just wondering if it was common behaviour.

Especially if it was as common as storing your watch on a speaker magnet, or wearing it in open space.

Apparently, these are all good reasons not to purchase a Rolex...

Please post photo's.

Asking for a friend who has been unfashionably wearing watches on his wrist...

My apologies for any confusion.

A member on another forum suggested that Rolex movements were unreliable because they would be damaged irreparably if:

1. Kept in a pocket for a day alongside an iPhone
2. Stored in a speaker magnet
3. Worn in open (outer) space

I was just wondering if any of these activities were common practice amongst Rolex owners, so I came to the most knowledgeable Rolex owners on the planet @TRF...

i usually wear my spacesuit when having outer space walks, while servicing the spacecraft, and this spacesuit i have to say that it helps a lot. it has huge pockets where i carry a speaker and a rolex together with an iphone for space selfies.

Thank you for your detailed explanation and insights into your extravehicular activities...

Has this resulted in anything more than cosmetic damage to your Rolex?

I suggested in another forum that Rolex movements have an established history of reliability and were relatively bulletproof.

This was met with derision, and a number of examples were provided to demonstrate the poor performance of Rolex movements under certain conditions.

I’m just checking the veracity of those claims from a source of actual Rolex owners who undertake these activities.

Seems I have found a few...

OK, I've no interest in wearing or using my Rolex inappropriately. As far as magnetizing that is easily remedied. As far as outer space, that was done with success. as far as iPhone/Rolex joint pocketing my pants have multiple pockets so I see no reason nor do I see a reason to pocket my Rolex at all. I guess if I was going to the gym I could imagine that but then I wouldn't be wearing the pants.

Your friend (associate) is clearly looking for extreme reasons to discount Rolex watches. His only needed reason is that he doesn't want one.

Since when is winding a Rolex inappropriate. The famed watch run-off by the Nasa geeks chose the Omega which needed to be wound and leaks like a sieve. I'd much prefer a Daytona in todays world. No need for autowinding in a zero gravity situation in order for a windable watch to work.

Thanks for your detailed and explanatory response.

Oh, I’m pretty sure he wants one, but he’s just looking for excuses to justify buying an Omega instead...

Note I added more to my explanation. I'd also venture that my Milgauss would work as well from an antimagnetic perspective as his chosen Omega.

Omega has some beautiful and great watches. he doesn't need an excuse in my opinion, especially if it is related to not normal wearing conditions. it's a matter of taste, available budget, other watches in possession etc.

And I would agree.

Of course, the NASA tests were conducted over 50 years ago, and tests that the pre-Daytona failed would not have any relevance for any modern day Rolex wearer, and would probably kill them before the watch failed...

1. High temperature

48 hours at a temperature of 160°F (71°C) followed by 30 minutes at 200°F (93°C). This under a pressure of 5.5 psi (0.35 atm) and relative humidity not exceeding 15%.

4. Humidity

A total time of 240 hours at temperatures varying between 68°F and 160°F (20°C and 71°C) in a relative humidity of at least 95%. The steam used must have a pH value between 6.5 and 7.5.

Which begs the question, would a Rolex survive the journey?

Your namesake however, has been documented as having destroyed a Rolex for the purposes of using it as a weapon...

Absolutely correct, but he felt the need to disparage the reputation of Rolex, so I wanted to come to the defence of the crown...

For such purposes, an Omega Speedmaster is more appropriate.
