On waitlist at an AD but got the piece elsewhere. Now what?

Suppose you are waiting for a desirable piece from AD #1 for a couple years. You also expressed interest in the same piece at AD #2 a little while after AD #1.

AD #1 says they will make it happen very soon.. Great! but then AD #2 comes out of left field and surprises you with the call!

What do you tell AD #1 now if you want to make sure you don’t jeopardize the relationship but also don’t want two of the same watch?

Asking for a friend...

I would just either be honest and maybe try to get something else or maybe just call and say your tastes have changed and you want something else

The truth. I would tell them another dealer offered me the watch I was looking for and that I purchased it but that I still wish to have relations with them in the future. If they cant respect that honestly and they hold that against me, then screw them.

I had this issue with my last Sub ND purchase in December

I told my main AD the truth. Told him sorry, Tourneau offered me one and had to jump on it! My SA was understandable and quite frankly they will most likely thank you because now they can sell a watch to another good client of theirs.

This won't get you blacklisted either and if it does then your AD wasn't a good one to begin with

In this day and age, buy the second one too and hold on to it. Money in the bank.

If you have good reason to prioritize the relationship with AD 1, then call them, explain, and see what they say. If they say "we just got one and it's yours" then stick with them. More likely they'll wish you luck and just move to the next name on the list.

When/if they call to say the watch is in, tell them you’re going to pass this time.

Be honest. You won’t break their hearts. They’ll have no problem moving it.

If you can spare the cash, buy the piece twice and hold on to it. Despite the negative commentary regarding 'investment'....it would likely be a good investment.

Nice to see and hear this advice for a fellow member. Better to be honest and build relationships. Who knows when you want to return there for another purchase. In the meantime, check out what the extra watch is and see if they are willing to sell it to another Forum member at list price :-). I just started looking for a GMT Master II and ADs are laughing at me. Reached out to Bucherer in Zurich where I purchased my GMT Master in 1986 and no help or willingness to add me to the list until I appear in their store in person. Not likely during Covid

Be honest and tell them you need to pass.
No need to embellish the how/ why behind all of it.
They will move along to the next customer.
No harm, no foul.

This is exactly what I said. Agree 100%.

Got my Red SD a couple of months ago. I went to the two ADs in town one day and asked to be put on their list. AD 2 came through in less than two weeks! A week later, AD 1 called and I had to tell them, sorry, AD 2 got one for me last week. I felt kind of bad as the saleslady gave me the Rolex cataloger, etc. I thanked her for the call and told her I hoped to deal with her in the future.

Ya, tell the truth. They’ll probably still be happy for you anyway. And there is a name right behind yours on a list, so then they may get “the call”. It might be one of us!!

These AD’s have you on a string for YEARS!!! And then you’re trying to figure out some way to tell them you’re not waiting any longer? Don’t be such a hand wringer, they don’t give a darn

The AD1 will be happy as they can now take you off the list and give it to someone else.

It’s not illegal for you to shop elsewhere, nor is it illegal for the AD to sell to other customers...

You’re not married to the AD...

2 years!!!! You owe them nothing nor do they owe you anything. Just thank them for keeping you on their list and tell them you hope the client that receives that watch will be as happy as you are now.

If it’s a profitable piece, buy it and flip it for a profit.

That’s a waste of time and much less profitable than most people think...

Tell your friend...
...to channel their inner sociopath. They should call the AD weekly and inquire about the watch. Be bold and ask questions so they have to lie in response. Make them squirm. On that same day of the phone call, go visit the AD with the new watch in a pocket. Talk with the SA face to face and ask more questions they have to lie in response. Listen to voice cracking, weight shifting and nervous had wringing. Don't disclose the secret in the pocket. Relax, enjoy the entertainment. Better than cable. -John

In fact the longer they think about it
The higher probability it wll sell to someone else and it won’t even be a choice to consider

To be clear I already bought the piece from the other AD. I’m saying now I expect the other AD is going to call with it soon and I already have it.

If you think you're actually on a "list," that you have a "relationship" with your AD, and that you actually posted about this, then you have bigger issues.
