Icon5 Does hype affect your purchase decision?

Arbitrage opportunities aside, does a watch being in demand or hard to obtain make you want the watch more?

What are some in demand watches that you would not buy if they weren’t actually in demand?

At the moment I personally am not a fan of the hulk, Kermit, Pepsi color schemes and would probably not add them to my collection if I was told I cannot resell them ever.

Nope. I get what I like regardless of what the flavor of the week is.

Hype, if you can call it that, around the Explorer 1 has led me to consider the characteristics that make it a great watch and now I want to purchase one. Previously I never considered it due to all the other higher profile options.

I wanted a 14060 but the prices of them are absurd now. So yes, the hype has impacted the price, which has affected my decision.

It does. I buy what I like but i am affected by the hype and the opinions of others. So what others like can sometimes affect what I like.

Value retention also affects what I buy, and hype affects that too.

Wouldn't buy a BLRO at 50% off MSRP.

Ok, so in this case it does effect my decision to not buy. I have been on the fence with a 14060 for years, and now it's just absurd.

People say they don’t care, yet they will buy up hot models at MSRP at any opportunity. People say one thing and do the other.

Hype tends to put me off watches. 5711, 15202, plus the BLRO, BLNR and Hulk in particular are so overrated and overhyped it just leaves me cold.

I have noticed my tastes have changed, not sure about the influence the current hype has had on it, but I still don't find myself in the search for BLRO (I have a BLNR), or a Daytona (I have a non-Rolex Chrono, and quite frankly rarely use the feature).
Useful/unique features catch my attention usually, so GMT, and SkyDweller have been my most recent acquisitions, to join my RG DayDate.
YMMV
As long as you personally enjoy it, I don't think you can go wrong, hype or no hype.

Only if I’m after 2 watches equally. Say a GMT and a Datejust. I would take the GMT first if offered because the Datejust will be easier to acquire later.

I buy what i like and if it is a "hot model" then its on purpose. I have no urge to buy something based on popular demand.

Hype is absolutely not a factor except for the fact, I want the YG green dial Daytona and I would not have known about it if John Mayer had not called attention to it!

as others said above won’t buy something don’t like in general (Hulk is a good example) unless it is a really good profitable opportunity

so this:

It can. I may not buy a watch if it is overly popular.
