On vacation I saw a ton of Rolexes but only one still rules them all

Just got back from a week long Turks and Caicos vacation and saw more Rolexes in the wild than I have seen in the previous 18 months.

Saw steel Daytonas, Ceramic Daytonas, 2 tone Daytonas, 6 digit subs galore (everyone and their dog had one), Datejusts, yachtmasters, OPs and a handful of Sea Dwellers.

A lot of people looked like their 6 digit subs were wearing them. Way too big on their wrists and extremely blingy.

Only one watch really blew me away because it looked so perfect…it was the old, humble king, the 16610…It just looked like an amazing watch rather than an amazing piece of jewelry that also happens to be a watch

To the 16610. Long live the king!!!

Something to be said about 5 digit references.

I get that feeling, living and working in the Central London I see so many of the modern 6 digit "hot" references that I've become "desensitised" by them.
It's often the rarer 5 and 4 digits that usually make me double take.

My thoughts exactly. From a couple feet away, the watches basically look the same.

Cool story bro, only one thing worse than a watch that wears its owner - someone getting annoyed about a watch wearing its owner.

A bunch of five digits are on sale lately in the for sale section. Great deals available for much less than 11/12 series models.
I prefer the newer stuff personally and the market has shifted towards this as well, but I wouldn’t mind a nice five digit SD 16600. It’s the watch I regret selling the most and it was my first Rolex.

Sounds like a nice vacation. I like seeing watches on owners wrists who are out and about. I like them all, 6 digit/5 digit you name it.

This is the first time I heard about a submariner 40mm being big and blingy. Hmm. Unless.....these rich folks passed down the 6 digit subs to their 12 yr olds and the resort was stacked with 12 yr old kids wearing 6 digit subs. Cool

I love the 16610 but wouldn’t trade my 126610 for it. Mine is not jewelry. It’s not the watch, its the owner and how they wear it.

Just love this 4 digit or 5 digit is best debate.

In reality when the 14**** series is being launched in 20 or so years time the forums will be full of;

“cannot get over how blingy these new Subs are, those old 11 and 12 series were by far the best”

For me the new 124060 is by far the best, but then I would say that, I have one, I just hope I’m still around and wearing it 20 years from now.

The Submariner is a great watch irrespective of which iteration you have on your wrist.

Well for all the countless millions of Rolex watches produced over the past almost 100 years the DJ range is still the biggest seller world wide. Myself much prefer the 5 series watches over the 6 series, my personal favourite the 16600 SD.

The 16610 is a great looking watch. However, the only place where 6 digit subs can be too
“ blingy” are on watch forums. Nowhere else in the universe.

I usually wear my GMT when I’m traveling. If I had a Sea Dweller, I’d consider wearing it.

Lol.

I remember in the early 2000s, researching on the old Timezone and other forums for my first Rolex (a 16710). There were a lot of comments about how 5-digit Rolex was too jewelry (blingy) because of the gold surrounds and sapphire crystals…

Every generation gets to lament the how their Rolexes were the true “best” iterations and new ones are too fill-in-the-blank.

Relatable in so many areas. Hey, to each their own. But I’m still wondering what is driving these trends. Same with car design. My theory is that a lot of design decisions these days are not made any longer to cater to western sensibilities but to the Far East and other places with new money but very different tastes.
Who is the audience in places like Turks and Caicos? Never been and likely never will.
