Got Really offended

this incident really got me offended

i went to work today with my new Breitling Colt GMT for the first time, when it was noticed by a colleague (who doesnt own any luxury watch) he said:

Not Really! you should have got a better watch!

is this a defensive tactic because he doesnt have a good watch???
i understand that it is a matter of a personal taste but i dont see it nice to let people down when they are happy about something.

There are always going to be people out there that love to rain on your parade...aka, they see you happy and they would rather see you unhappy.

Just human nature, best to let it not bother you. Most people are ignorant about watches and have developed strong opinions on what is "best" due to marketing and price point.

Perhaps your co-worker is jealous too since:
  • A) you own a Plat Yachtmaster,
  • B) you now own a Breitling and
  • C) he doesn't even own 1 luxury watch.

By the way, I heard Dubai is the Rolex watch capital of the world. Is this true?

Life's too short to worry about it.
Now you know where he's at - and that's where you're not.
He'll only feel more smug if he sees you're upset. You already know you don't need approval from a guy like that.
Congratulations on the Breitling!

he doesnt even know that i have a YM (this would burn my hands ) i come to work with an Omega PO.

the amount of Rolexes in Dubai makes you really think that it is priced like a Swatch although we have only one AD (but you can get very good deals from gray market)

i was offered a SS daytona V serial brand new from a grey dealer with a very good price but couldnt afford it. Dubai is a very tempting place to the extent that a lot of people have impulse purchases on very expensive things (even cars)

If he says that again, ask him what watch he's wearing! Then laugh after he shows you.

I would suggest that you just give this "a" hole a wide berth in the future.

Haha! This happened to me just recently. I just brushed it off since the guy couldn't be more my opposite in every way. At least your guy stated it in a tactful manner, my friend simply said "Man, I really hate that watch of yours." Can it get worse than that?

This happened with my Ebel BTR, which, confirms the fact that their designs are truly of the love 'em or hate 'em variety.

Don't be worried about comments like that.

I've come to learn that few people in my life know much about timepieces. I recently confided to a friend the amount of time I spend online researching, reading and comparing thoughts on watches, and he was shocked.

Watches obviously aren't this guy's passion.

Enjoy your watch!

Indeed live is to short to upset over this kind off comments, mainly these folk get driven by jealousy or simply have a shortage of attention ( as seen in the old peoples home) and try to get attention that way. Congratulations on your new watch. !! enjoy..

Isn't money drying up in Dubai?

Quite a lot of unemployed and many just leaving their expensive cars (still on hire purchase) in the airport and taking a plane home.

You own a nice watch

Your colleague knows nothing about watches

Why be upset about an opinion from someone who knows nothing?

Enjoy your watch

Interestingly a similar incident happened to my Dad. We were at a wedding reception when one of my dad's old colleagues came up to him & said hello. The two have not seen each other in nearly 30+ years & the gentleman sported a TT Sub w/ a serti dial. He looked at my dad's wrist & sized him up commenting that he needed to update his Rolex & get w/ the times. He told my dad that the Rolex he had on his wrist was old & that getting a new one like the one he had on was a bit more costly, but it would be a good sign to show that my father had done well for himself. My dad had on his black face 6263 (circa 1980). My dad, controlled his chuckle & said, "perhaps you are right".

If he doesn't have a good watch of his own, then their you go. It's just spite out of hatred. I mean that's like someone telling a Ferrari F430 owner, he should have bought an Enzo. Just plain stupidity. Like others have stated, it's human nature to be jealous. Some people just can't help themselves. They can't stand others having nice things.

PS - Trying to put something down is basically showing your jealousy in the first place. Something I picked up from a friend in middle school, if someone has something your jealous of, just congratulate them on it and move on. No need to try to take them down a notch and give them the satisfaction of knowing your envious of it.

Haha wow your father has alot of patience, How does the other gentlemen know that's the only Rolex your father owns? Something tells me that this old colleague was a dickhead 30 years previous. lol

Well he will be 69 next year & he has dealt with all kinds of people. Yes, he did mention that the guy was a A-hole then & still is. My dad has a humble collection (2 SS DJs, SS blk face Daytona, & a vintage Milgauss), but his pride & joy is his 6263.

I asked my pops why he didn't school the old goat. My pops simply replied, "you can't teach an old fool to not judge a book by its cover, I am not his father, but you are my son, I hope you learned something from that".

Thanks Mike! I'll let "Pops" know about this conversation!
I'm sure that your dad is just as wise if not wiser.
