Opinion on flipping my submariner for two omegas?

In 2012 I got my first Rolex as a gift, 116610LV. I loved the watch, but as a one and only watch I grew tired of the green bezel, it was just too green for me as a daily. After a year, I flipped it for a 116610LN and I have been wearing it daily since October 2013.

The submariner has been awesome, but I am getting the itch to have a new watch and also a watch that is a little more dress and a little less sporty. If money and availability were not an issue I would add a dj41 blue stick or rhodium on jubilee. However, both availability and pricing is a factor, which got me thinking of selling my submariner, capitalizing on the current very high prices and picking up a new omega sea master aqua terra 41 green dial and new sea master 300m in either black or white dial, and possibly even some cash my way.

I think I will miss the nice oyster bracelet of my submariner but I’m a bit enticed of the thought of two new watches without coming out of pocket. The other option I’m considering is just adding the aqua terra and keeping the submariner. Am I crazy for wanting to sell the submariner?

I think you will regret it but that is because I think if a man owns only one watch it should be a sub. Add a used omega - they are very affordable used.

Keep the sub and add the other 2 when financially feasible? Omegas can be had at discounts from AD at the moment. Would be a good "relationship starter" since you are after Omegas anyway.

I considered this same scenario. I had an Explorer as my one and only and strongly considered a sports/dressy combo. I strongly considered a black 43mm Planet Ocean and a two tone Aqua Terra. I ended up going Explorer II and DJ Wimbledon dial. It was a surprisingly tough call. I could pretty easily be an Omega guy quite happily. I say, go for it!

I wouldn't do it - but can see why you want to. But I get your thinking of cashing in and getting two (sport/non sport).
But I also think you will miss owning a Rolex. I have had a few Omegs's over the years but prefer Rolex.

I would take a long term view of trying to get 2 new Rolex's at retail and sell the Sub.
Something like the DJ41 (smooth bezel/Jubilee) and an Explorer ll/YM that are not 'too hard' to get hold of with a bit of patience.
And start saving a little for when they land.

If you get your name down and are not in a rush, they should eventually arrive. When the first one becomes available, sell the Sub and wait for the 2nd.

I am currently thinking of selling my BLNR to get a YM or Explorer and pocket the difference.

I had an LV like you also and struggled with the colour.....but it got stolen anyway.

Bought the DJ a couple of years ago and love it. My go to watch. It actually does everything I want and is more comfortable than the sport models.
The BLNR hardly gets worn now, but I will keep a sports Rolex. And the YM is more comfortable than the Sub but with similar functionality.

I understand. Since you have owned it for close to 10 years there is nothing special about it anymore especially with that green which will get tiresome especially after 10 years. Green is a hype colour. The fashion will change and this colour will go out of fashion as part of normal fashion cycle. Stick to Black or Blue.

I would sell it for some other model Rolex or move up and get an AP. You'll need to add cash.

I wouldnt trade 2 Omega's for it though.

Trade for another Rolex and get some cash back. Or add cash and trade for a Daytona or AP. Trade for 2 Omegas? The grey dealers will love you for it.

Thank you all for the feedback. After everyone’s input I do think I would regret selling my submariner and the solution is to add new watches as my situation evolves. One thing to clarify I sold the hulk after a year, I’ve been wearing a regular black submariner daily since October 2013.

You might consider asking the same question over on omegaforums to get the other perspective. I think most collectors tend to trade up over time but some trade down and don’t look back. One question to consider in this scenario is how important to you is the investment aspect of owning a Rolex? If you keep the sub it will likely hold its value better than the Omega pieces you mentioned. Years from now will you feel regret seeing the price of your old sub rise while the Omegas depreciate? For me personally, the investment aspect of watch collecting is secondary. I would rather have something I am excited about on the wrist than something I am bored with appreciating but sitting in the drawer.

I think I would (but maybe not a green dial given your comments). The Sun has served you well, but while it’s price is artificially high you have the chance to buy two (arguably better) watches which have history, come from a respected manufacturer and will cover nearly all bases.

Chuck a Speedy in there and it could be the perfect 3 watch collection.

Will the person who gave you the Sun originally be offended?

How does this make sense? The omega is at least the equal in terms of quality to the Rolex, Rolex have marketed better but certainly don't make a better watch than Omega

IMO the Aquaterra and Seamaster felt cheap compared to my sub. Maybe it was the bracelets.

Interesting that a green bezel and a green dial have different thresholds for daily wear. I'm wondering is this is due to the different saturation levels between the two; green bezels are typically brighter than green dials. I certainly would find it easier to wear a green dial every day versus a green bezel, but to each his own.

Entirely up to you. I'm not living your life and I can't tell you what you like.

What I don't like is dials with grooves all over them. Tried one, couldn't get on with it. Omegas look great in the case, but to me don't feel so good in the hand. I have a Speedmaster Professional. It's good, but it's not outstanding. I'm happy to have it in my collection and get wear and tear out of it. I'd never flip a Sub for one though. The Sub is outstanding and capable of delivering in looks, usability and durability in the long term - as you have seen for yourself.

Change is not necessarily bad and should be embraced when of benefit. Change for change's sake can often be an expensive mistake.
