More Rolex but buy other watches too?

Hi All,

Need some advice. My AD is helpful in getting me new Rolexes but at the same time, they also seem to pitch for buying other watches that don't really interest me that much like a Tudor, Panerai, and most recently a Carl F. Bucherer (CFB) Manero flyback. It's not that I don't like these watches for their aesthetics and features but they don't hold value and it's not like I have a lot of spare change lying around :) It's also not a watch many people know about. To me a luxury watch is a combination of workmanship, a celebration of a milestone, and a symbol of status.

I don't want to ruin my relationship with them but I don't know much about the Bucherer watches. The watch in concern is a CFB with Bucherer Blue dial apparently a hot piece but I can't seem to justify it based on that.

I am afraid turning them down may hurt my potential to buy more Rolexes that I want from them.

What are your thoughts on the CFB? Would you buy a CFB to maintain a relationship?

Unless you want to marry the SA buying a watch you don’t want would be the daftest thing. Don’t forget to bring your SA some presents as well

Did your AD recently get a pink slip from Rolex?

How the hell can any AD be helpful if he/she wants to you buy other products that you dont want to buy. This so called AD relationship stuff nonsense is now getting more ridiculous each day.

Haven’t seen of these for a while. Yes it’s safe to wear your Rolex a scooter. Biggest danger is getting mugged at traffic lights.

What has your AD gotten you so far vs what others ones are you expecting to get?

That will partially dictate whether buying watches you don’t like and how much of them

Buy what you like. But maybe try on those other watches if you have not. I recently added the Cartier santos and a Tudor to my wishlist after trying them on. I would also probably wear those more than my Rolex as well. It’s getting to the point where I am almost afraid to wear a stainless steel Rolex due to its value.

Although I have and highly value Rolexes, I have grown to feel that they are all pretty much the same and have broadened my horizons to other makers. Yes, in many cases they likely won’t hold their value, or even increase, like Rolex or a few others, but if you intend to keep a watch for a long time that’s of little importance.

As for the relationship matter, I personally give that little value.

And that’s really the core issue, isn’t it? If it traded for double in the secondary market, many people would buy it anyway — regardless of if they liked the watch.

+100%, couldn't agree more! And anybody who lets an AD pressure them into buying something they don't want is sixpence short of a shilling, as you put it recently! I haven't heard that old saying since my schooldays in England...!

What Rolexes are you trying to buy?

If they are promising you a meteorite BLRO and a stainless Daytona at the same time as the bundling purchase, then certainly this could make lots of sense.

If they are asking you to purchase something now to increase your 'prospect' of getting something in the future, that is preposterous.

The only way you will get the Rolex you want is to buy other watches that are available. You are either in the game or not. Don't buy the watch only if you don't care about a Rolex allocation. Buy it if you eventually want Rolex

My AD knows I’ll buy Rolexes from them. But also like omega which they don’t sell and seem not to pressure me to buy any of the others they carry. (Cartier, breitling, Tudor, Patek, VC

I am not trying to disturb my existing relationship with them only because they've been giving me the rolexes ive been wanting so far. However, I think there comes a point when there is this unspoken expectation that I'd have to buy other watches too and not just be a rolex hog.

Also, a watch holding value for me means a lot because it allows me to consider change if I want to. I am finding it hard to justify the purchase of certain luxury watches which is another reason why I am looking for advice.

First, I don’t buy watches I don’t like. Second, there are some great watches from other brands (Tudor, VC, Patek, ALS etc). Third, if you’re looking at the long-term value of a watch purchase, you’re better off going with an index fund long-term. I don’t see Warren Buffett collecting Rolexes.

Just one person’s opinion.

I hope what I meant wasn't taken in the wrong sense. For me, holding value is being able to be able to exchange it in the future without having to lose a lot of money.

For ex: I bought an omega for 4K. Today, I use it very rarely and I can't sell it cos it would only fetch me less than 1K. However, I've had a two tone rolex which I exchanged for another rolex and just lost like $500 from my first rolex's purchase value.

That's what makes Rolex so appealing for me.

Excellent catch, I noticed the same thing. If we’re buying watches solely on value retention, then we’re doing a lot of this to ourselves.

OP, in your case you need to find a boutique where they only sell the brand you like. If they push you to purchase more, at least it’ll be the same brand.

In order to get the desirable models these days, you either spend money buying watches you may not want an AD who practices bundling, or spend money paying the premium at a grey dealer.

Either option isn't attractive but it is what it is.
