Rolex datejust 36 - jubilee or oyster?

I have been looking for ways to diversify my investment portfolio and thus would like to buy myself a steel Rolex. I have narrowed my options to 36 mm datejust with smooth bezel and slate roman dial (aka wimbledon). I believe this is a handsome looking sporty configuration and offers real value in todays market. Especially so after the latest price increase.

I know I should buy what I love but I would like to hear your opinions, whether I should go for an oyster bracelet or jubilee. In pictures the polished oyster looks kind of cool but I guess it will be a scratch magnet? Where as I have never seen a modern jubilee bracelet live. Would the jubilee be more comfortable and less scratchy? My other watches are explorer 39 mm and 5-digit bluesy. Maybe I could swap the explorer bracelet to the datejust now and then to alter the look :D

Would love to hear some opinions.

(Btw, the investment part was a joke. I just want a good watch, which somewhat holds value.)

I am awaiting the same watch from my AD. Although I have opted for IMO the classic option for a Datejust and requested the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet.

Jubilee is more comfortable and gets less scratched than oyster. You already have two oyster bracelets so adding a jubilee is a good option. I personally love the jubilee bracelet.

I wanted that watch for months. Then saw it and was underwhelmed. I tried it with a smooth bezel, I still like the dial so want to try a fluted bezel to see if it looks better.

I have an oyster version with the smooth bezel, It’s the 1 watch in my collection that i’m not 100% sure about. If it had the fluted bezel I would prefer the jubilee. I have large wrists and it does look a but small on me hence it is hardly worn. It’s a good loaner for my sons or wife though and the dial looks fabulous. If i had the chance again I would have bought it in a 41 but with the oyster with the smooth bezel again.

Personally speaking, jubilee but I would also go for the fluted bezel. It's just that bit more special and would really set it apart from the others you already own. Wimbledon - I'm not at all a fan. Very dull dial in my opinion. I think there's better DJ dials, but everyone seems to want the wimbledon

I agree that the fluted bezel is the classic datejust and better looking. However, in my opinion the fluted bezel is very flashy. I intend to use this piece as a sports/everyday watch so I prefer a solid steel watch. My rational behind the wimbledon dial is that I really like roman dials but I also find them a bit stuffy. Wimbledon dial mixes things up a bit.

So jubilee seems to be the preferred option here. I wonder will the smooth bezel-jubilee bracelet combination aesthetically work together?

I went with 36mm smooth bezel and oyster bracelet. However I gave no thought to investment or resale value.
So from that point of view I cannot advise you how too invest.
I simply purchased the watch I liked and am now slowly adding scratches and building it’s individual ‘personality’.

I prefer the classic DJ with the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet. The bracelet is very comfortable and will not show scratches as much as the oyster. Same with the bezel. With every watch I own I take into consideration my trade/sell options and have found the more unique the watch, dial/bezel/bracelet, the more difficult it can be to move. With the classic DJ with a Fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet I would think a blue/silver/black/white dial would give it a classic and timeless appeal that would translate to living in the collection longer or being traded or sold very easily should you desire. In the end we should buy what we want and will wear. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I have actually recently been very interested in a steel and rose 36mm Datejust in jubilee with fluted bezel. Just wish that it could come with an olive green baton dial

I see that you can get an olive green dial with diamond markers if you go for steel and yellow gold, but only slate is available for steel and rose

Jubilee and fluted are a must for any DJ in my opinion. A smooth bezel on oyster DJ is basically just a small step up from an OP. The bracelet and bezel are the signatures of a Datejust.

I have always thought jubilee + fluted OR oyster + smooth but no other combinations on modern DJs. But with the new, busier, dials I have to say smooth bezel + jubilee works very well. Esp palm and blue fluted dial

I've never been a fan of Jubilee bracelets. My DJ 36 Turn-O-Graph has an Oyster bracelet with polished center links and I love it.

Thank you for the opinions. Conclusions are that no love for the domed bezel but plenty of love for the jubilee on the forum. So as a compromise I decided to order 36 mm version with domed bezel and a jubilee.

The ad I contacted did not have it in stock but I was given a delivery time frame of ~ 3 months by the ad.

I'd go jubilee if it's for your wife, and oyster if its for you and you have small wrists.

The bezel choice is more critical than the bracelet choice on this one. The bracelet can be easily swapped out, even at point of collection from AD.
For desirability, value retention and probably increase in value over time, the fluted bezel would be the better choice.

For a DJ36, I'd go jubilee & fluted without doubt.

DJ41, I prefer Oyster & smooth

Depending on the look you're going for, I'm good with either jubilee or oyster with PCL; however, my one must on a DJ36 is a fluted bezel.

I'd do the jubilee for two reasons, one it is icon to Rolex. Two, it is without a doubt the most comfortable to wear.

There is no right or wrong. It is all about preferences. Contrary to the "norm" I quite like fluted bezel and oyster bracelet combo.


I went for smooth bezel and oyster bracelet based on the fact that I prefer a more sportier/versatile look.
Jubilee has a more jewellery feel. So does the flutted bezel....so its up to you to decide how much of that look/feel you prefer.

I owned a smooth oyster and sold it. Found it too boring. If I ever dip my toes into DJs again it'd be for a fluted jubilee.

I have had both and can confirm the oyster is a scratch magnet (as are all pcl bracelets). The jub/fluted configuration will look like new for longer but both are beautiful. Here are two I have owned because pictures are more fun :)
