Give up the SS/Platinum YM for a SS Daytona?

I've been wanting a SS Daytona with white dial for awhile, but I wasn't willing to buy one until I try it on. The dilemma being is that I haven't been able to find one new or used in stock at an AD to try on.

So tphan was kind enough to meet me and let me try his on. My first impression was that it seems smaller than my YM even though they are the same size. I do like how the Daytona looks, but I am not sure if it's worth giving up my YM for it. (I am a one watch person.) The dilemma is which one looks better and is the Daytona really worth $10k USD?

I tried on Art's Daytona and I'm completely smitten. I just couldn't justify the price, since it would be so hard to find a good used one.

I also tried on the SS/Plat YM, but it seemed like the lugs were "longer" than on my SD... it actually hung off my wrist a bit

I'd like to buy one or these other in the near future here.

Oh yeah............ I'd toss a YM for a Daytona any day of the week...........

I'd stick with the YM. You'd have a date and no one would look at you crazy if you wore it to the gym, or a wedding either. I miss mine very much, my SS Daytona... not really. Just make sure you're doing it because you like the watch and not because of rarity or anything, because it's just not hard to get your hands one anymore. In the end, get the one you personally like.

Chozen1, don't know where you are, but SS Daytonas are still hard to get here....the other day I went to Jared Jewelers' swiss watch show, where they got one in and sold it immediately.

Anyway, back to topic at hand: while there, I was wearing mine, and had the opportunity to A/B it against the Platty, wearing the Daytona on the left hand and the Platty on the right, checking them out in the mirror....and while I really like the Platty, imo the Daytona just spanked it.

But anyway, you've gotta go with the one that floats your boat the mostest, and which is most affordable for you. If you're happy with the Platty, I'd say keep it. No sense in taking the hit on selling yours used and shelling out the difference on a "maybe", the Platty is a gorgeous watch.

Do you want the Daytona because YOU want it or because many others claim it's the "most desirable Rolex" and the "hardest to acquire"?


It's a great watch, but I know more than a few people who bought it because of the hype and then regretted their decision, lamenting the smaller appearance and the absence of a date function.


If it's your grail, then heck yes, go for it. But if you are only seeking it because others tell you you should, then pass.


The SS Daytona is no longer a difficult watch to acquire, and you will be able to readily purchase it (despite what some may tell you) for years to come.


Ultimately, only you know the proper choice! Go with your gut, and you'll win.


If you think about it, some of the Rolex watches that are now most rare are actually rare because they were so unappealing to the masses and had low sales numbers when they were originally produced.

I had YM SS/Plat that I sold so I could by SS Daytona W/D. No regret whatsoever. Don't forget, if you would have these from an AD. they are only $700.00 difference new. But as soon as you walk out of that AD, you'd be lucky to get $6500 for YM.

I must admit I am not much of a Daytona fan but I am even less of a Yachtmaster fan! I have a friend who has one and loves it but it just has never appealed to me.

It is so hard to advise someone when you do not know them so I would say this.
Look at both, then feel which one makes your heart race a little faster,which one would you keep glancing at more, the one that does both is the one that should be on your wrist as when it comes to luxury watches I think it is all about the passion we have for the peice

I do like chronographs. My first one was a Fossil in high school then I picked up a Tissot PRS200 several years ago. I still have the Tissot and I still think it's a great looking watch, but I am truly a one watch person so I really only wear the YM. With that said, I really do like the white dial SS Daytona for its looks.

I've been following the For Sale section for awhile now and I know that I can get the Daytona at any second so it's not the "rarity" that attracts me. If I could get a discount on a new SS Daytona, I probably would have already gotten one.

What I will miss about the YM is the date. Not the date function itself, but the sound it makes when it changes over each night. I also would miss the bi-directional bezel since I like to use it to time things. Yes the Daytona is designed for timing things, but unscrewing both pushers first and then remembering to screw them back on isn't as easy.

I like the Platty, i think its a goregeous watch when i see it next a sub. a daytona imo, is in a different league, its a chronograph......some people hate haivng so many dials that they feel they would barely utlize, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.......lol...i went for the daytona.......the hype aside.....if u really like the SS go for it, hypothetically if rolex never manufactured a black dial i would have bought a tt-gmt IIc instead, the white dial daytona doesnt sing to me the way the black dials does, yet.....plus, 1) it is the cheapeast rolex chronograph 2) good resale - doesnt matter to me, cuz i dont ever intend on selling it. 3) to get a watch of the same caliber from AP, VC, would be if not more, then just as expensive. 4) its a goregous rolex, believe me pictures dont do it justice 5) dont like the clasp on the yatchmaster, they need to upgrade it 6) most people cant even tell that is a rolex...(this is actually a good thing...believe me) 7) you'll find silly reasons to use the chronograph.....but its fun 8) if the ladies arent being nice to you, you get just as much excietment from looking at the your watch.....hehehhe 9) ADDED BONUS: its rare, there is hype (should be the last reasons) 10) power reserve is very good.....72h...

make a list...weigh out what floats yur boat.....and goodluck deciding

From what I can gather, you're proposing selling/trading in your YM and paying something to get the Daytona. If I'm right, and assuming you really like the Daytona more than the YM, then I guess it boils down to how much extra you'd have to pay.

Stick with some solid NOBILITY......which you'll only find in the Platty - the only Rolex with a solid Platinum dial and bezel.

Unless you really, really love the Daytona, you would be making a big mistake parting with the Platty........for a set of useless Chrono functions!!

Obviously, I am a Daytona Fan. I believe there is just something about that watch... IMHO, the Daytona is just set apart from "regular" Rolexes. Maybe it's because it's the only one with a chrono, maybe some other reason. And of course there are things I consider shortcomings (no date for example), but over-all, and again strictly IMHO, I think it is just in a league of it's own. Nothing against any other person's choice in timepieces. Moving on, what's already been said here is exactly what I reccomend. First, NEVER buy a watch, (or anything), strictly because it is coveted by others, or is hard to aquire, or is in vogue, you choose a Rolex because when you put it on your wrist, it "Sings to you." There may be better ways to explain it but we all know what I'm talking about. From what I'm reading in your words, the Daytona is the one "singing to you" and the one you'll enjoy wearing more. IF I'm correct, and that IS the case, then by all means, go for it. Wear it in good health and enjoy!

No. Keep the YM. It's a much more useful and better looking watch than the Daytona. IMO the Daytona is over rated

Sounds like the YM has not lost it appeal to you.
I would wait until a great opportunity comes along to sell the YM or trade it for a Daytona if you decide the Daytona is the watch you want.
Both watches are readily available in the pre-owned market.

Hmmm, tough decision Vu. I'm not Daytona crazy, though I do prefer the white dial version. As for the YM, my favorite version is the TT white dial. So maybe I'm not much help after all!

I WILL say that you should really consider whether you can live without the date function, since you appear concerned about it. Any issue with a stationary chrono hand? I know I like to see the 'sweep'
