Mainly now they are no longer watches bought to be worn and enjoyed they are now thought of by many as little more than £$€ objects and little more. And many of todays younger age whose sole information cupboard is in so called social media,Instagram,Youtube etc .So many now do what ever social media dictates what to buy and brag about on these platforms, as so called social media have taken over there lives and use of there own brain power.

Good article .Thanks for posting .
Advantage of not shipping to Russia is that the rest of the world has a slightly higher chance of finding what they want at an AD. |

I did not click on the link as I never click links I am not 100% sure of, as most are just click bait today, but guessed what it was about.

I had the paywall but clicking “listen to the article” sorted that out. Read by the author too, not some bot. Interesting as WIS woes hit the mainstream but nothing surprising.

Maybe the author did some of his research right here…
Validating price levels in FS section. Reading the desperate AD stories. Calibrating samples of incomings. He’d not go far wrong just talking to a few of our trusted sellers here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Interesting to read it in the mainstream. I’ve never viewed any of my watches as investments.
I wonder if the reduction of watches shipping to Russia is contributing to the slight uptick in availability elsewhere… |

NYT has had quite a few articles on Daytona, Patek 5711 over the last few years and has chronicled the market phenomenon of rising demand and prices of these pieces.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/20/f...-nautilus.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/10/f...rry-stern.html https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/06/f...ona-watch.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/18/t...h-daytona.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/f...lex-biden.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/08/f...ppe-mille.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/31/f...-hodinkee.html There are many others. If anyone thinks they know a better newspaper than the NY Times or WSJ I'd like to know what it is so I can start reading it. |

Too many steps to open the link. One U- Tuber states he believes Rolex are actually over-priced at MSRP for what they are from a build and horological standpoint and the price point of the similar competition. It wasn't long ago most Rolex models sat in dealer's case for a while and could be had at nice discounts most places. And folks took a loss if they needed to sell. But back then people bought one watch to wear forever.

An easy read, as easy as it was to write.

Yes, the article sums up the situation pretty well. The increased demand is essentially made of new buyers who see watches strictly as an investment or at least a way to park their money safely and preserve capital. People who don't wear watches. Well, maybe they'll be tempted to take it out of the safe and acquaint themselves with the pleasure of wearing a nice piece.

If the typical trf member doesn’t have a nyt subscription, I think the narrative that Rolex buyers are so wealthy that Rolex demand will be unaffected by economic downturns might not be true.

Just keeping the “Rolex” brand in the minds of the general public with puff pieces like this only raise the brand cachet and continue its domination. Other brands can’t even pay for this kind of advertising for brand awareness to the mainstream.
