Thoughts on this 118

Hey Guys,

Thinking to get myself an everyday watch and been lusting over a Marina model for a while now. Seen this 118 and just wanted some input. The lugs look like they've been refinished quite a lot since the screw holes look very close to the edge...? It is a 20 year old watch so is this something you'd accept or is this too much?

Let me know what you think. Also I have in mind a 111.

Regards,
M.

Tough to judge with two similar off center photos…

It is my understanding that this shape of luminors do not have the REG TM on the crown guard, it is on the 1950 case, correct me if I'm wrong.

The lug holes loom perilously close to the edge….

Yeah the lugs are just off... not something made by Panerai.

Pretty sure I saw this watch on a well-known Panerai sight. If the same one, it looked legit on the watch and paperwork, but seemed to have been meaningfully over polished on the lugs. This is something I keep an eye out for after seeing a couple in similar condition as well as a radiomir or two which looked very clean but on closer examination you could tell the shape was altered meaningfully. Another spot to watch for is the case backs. These get over polished and the lettering will be different distances from the edge but the surface will be extra clean which is what normally gets noticed first.

My 112 lugs look a bit like that after 13 years. I don’t have a picture as it is getting it’s first service right now. Once back I’ll take some pics and share. These are big watches and if worn and used as they should be they will get knocked and worn over time. I’m okay with wear on my watch because I did it. If I was buying used I would look for a sharper example.

I agree, if you yourself have had the watch over a decade and then it gets polished etc then that's your own, but not much buying one like that already

The lugs on that one has definitely been polished at some point by the looks of it, but the lug holes/screws being close to the edge of the lug is a common thing with older bettarini cases.

Google some side pictures of 118, 061, 111, 001 etc and you'll see similar shapes.

Here's another:

Thanks for the pictures. They do look pretty much the same, I'm assuming it's been refinished at some point.
