WTS: Rolex Explorer 1016 Type 2 Underline Dial
Price: USD 19,000
Description This is the Rolex Explorer 1016. The Explorer is one of the more underrated watches from Rolex. While looking deceptively simple, it actually has a rich history. Created as a commemoration of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic expedition of Mount Everest, Rolex launched this model in 1953. The famous black 3-6-9 dial was first seen in the early references 6150 (pre-Explorer) and 6350. One of the most distinct models, the Rolex Explorer flew under the radar in comparison to other models such as the Submariner and Daytona until recently. The most well-known vintage reference of the Rolex Explorer is without a doubt the 1016. With a 26-year production period and several variants, it’s the most recognizable vintage Explorer model. While the aesthetic upgrades were minor from the 6610, the movement that was used was a new one - the Calibre 1560. Early 1016s were equipped with black gloss gilt dials and this evolved later to the matte black dials with a white font. Furthermore, the 1016 was produced at a transitional time while Rolex was moving towards tritium instead of the radioactive radium. This particular example is a Type 2 gilt dial with a closed chapter ring and an underline below the text at the 6. The underline indicates that the lume used was tritium and right after this reference, Rolex stamped their dials with Swiss > T25 indicative of tritium. This particular variant was also the last of the chapter rings for this reference. Condition This Rolex 1016 Explorer is in fair vintage condition. The case remains thick with fat and even lugs though polish history is unknown. The dial is original and shows sign of age with faded indices and numerals, particularly at the 3. The serial and reference are still clear between the lugs and corresponds with the dial period. The bracelet has some stretch consistent with its age. A large amount of the lume is missing from the minute hand. The hands appear to have been colour matched. When exposed to UV light, the lume lights up and falls off rapidly. The watch is in full working order.
