AD SA said warranty doesn’t transfer unless via AD?

Newbie question here. I can’t imagine this is true, with all the watches with warranty remaining being bought through TRF sellers. However, I just want to confirm from those who know better.

They said that the Rolex warranty doesn’t transfer if a used watch isn’t transferred through an AD. How does warranty work if the current owner isn’t the registered purchaser?

I’m considering some newer, used references with the 32xx movement and I would feel a lot more comfortable if I knew that the remaining warranty was good in case I ran into the 32xx issue.

Current warranty cards don't have names on them, just the date of purchase, you're good so long as you have that card.

Bingo. That’s what I’ve always been led to believe. Just like a buying a preowned car. Warranty follows the vin number if any remaining warranty left.

Granted in all the Rolex’s I’ve ever owned, dozens, I’ve never had to use it.

Warrant follows your watch. AD just employing scare tactics to get you to buy through them. There is nothing to transfer. No database of names linked to watches that AD can access and edit.

They don't know the names just the watch serial numbers. So it follows the watch.

Good indicator of an AD to avoid though, so not a complete waste of your time.

As stated the kernel of truth here is than an AD must register the warranty. After that anyone can use it. I'm hoping the AD was trying to tell you that a grey dealer may have a watch with "open" papers meaning the warranty was never registered. In that case the watch will not have any warranty and no way to activate it.

According to Rolex, you do:

The Rolex international five-year guarantee, issued by Rolex itself, will be completed and dated by your Official Rolex Retailer at the time of purchase and registered with Rolex.

The guarantee is valid only if (1) the watch has been sold by an Official Rolex Retailer; (2) the guarantee card has been completed in full by the Official Rolex Retailer at the time of purchase; and (3) the guarantee card is presented with the watch, either to an Official Rolex Retailer or to an Official Rolex Service Centre.

Why are there so many interpretation of a Rolex warranty Scott???

I didn’t think a ‘Grey’ dealer could sell a Rolex and give it a Rolex warranty.

A second hand dealer could if the Rolex was purchased from an AD.

Probably because so many have an opinion and few actually read what Rolex themselves actually state as warranty conditions.

I don't think there are any truly "grey market" Rolexes that have avoided the official AD network

Every Rolex in every reseller's inventory comes via an AD. So as long as the AD has registered the card and filled it out where required the watch is covered.

I've bought a few "new/unworn/stickered" Rolex watches from resellers. Every one has had a completed card from the original AD that sold it.

If you get a watch with a blank card from a reseller, then technically that has no warranty.

Edit to add - the wording on warranties in the Rolex USA inc issued booklets that accompany the watches was slightly different and included the wording "the watch has been sold to a consumer by the official Rolex Jeweller"

Which would indicate that in the USA any watch sold direct to a reseller by an AD (if we accept such practice exists) does not under those written terms have a Rolex warranty.

This. I never understood why you need the actual warranty card for proof of coverage when Rolex has all the information about when the card was activated.

As long as the warranty card was issued properly, it follows the watch. Grey dealers receive the card when they buy it and simply pass it along.

They still have the date hand written on them do they not?

Its not "out of date". Its exactly as written on the Rolex.com website as of today.

And If may ask, who, exactly, confirmed this?

And lastly, the USA is only part of Rolex global market. What an AD or RSC in the USA agrees to not necessarily global policy.
