Talk me out of getting a Daytona. Or into getting one! :)

I went from being lukewarm about this watch to having it become my favorite offering in the Rolex lineup. I have a very good AD relationship and could likely get one at MSRP, albeit with some wait. I am only interested in the SS panda dial.

Not looking to discuss “well you could always flip it for a profit” or just get a Tudor instead.

Here are my reservations:

-15K is a lot of money to have on my wrist. I am not exactly rich. I can afford the watch but not as easily as some members here. It is funny how you can talk yourself into higher and higher priced watches. My current daily wear is a 14 year old Panerai that I bought used for 3K. I love it and it does exactly what I need it to do (keep accurate time and make me smile). I bought my Sub for $7,500 and my DJ41 for $10,250. Even with the DJ it just felt really expensive to have on my wrist.

-I have no use for the additional complications. I do not even like a date complication on my watches. The extra bells and whistles look cool on the Daytona, but I would never actually use them.

-I realize many people swim with their Daytonas. However I would not feel comfortable doing so considering the value.

-Love the look of the PCL’s on the Oyster bracelet, but also understand that they scratch easily.

-i have a 7.25” wrist and larger than average hands and arms. Not huge by any stretch but I have heard many report that the Daytona “wears small”. I do appreciate some wrist presence and chunkier watches.

-Although I fantasize that this could be my grail watch, that could likely change.

Any thoughts or feedback appreciated.

It’s an amazing watch on the wrist, assuming you have a normal size or smaller wrist. Perfect balance. The watch obviously has a lot of history.

For all intents and purposes, all Rolex watches with PCL bracelets come with scratches on the clasp. But given the way the Daytona curves on the wrist, the low profile means you’re less likely to bang the case on something.

Finally, as difficult as it is to get one, in my view it’s a no-brainer to do so if you can.

What as the question? It’s a matter of “when” not “if” you just break down and purchase it.
It’s incredible and the most comfortable on the wrist with the best movement Rolex makes.

Have you ever tried on a modern Daytona?

I too used to be indifferent towards the Daytona but once I tried one on I fell in love. For me, it’s the perfect fitting modern sports watch.

Every collection should have a Daytona. If you can get it at MSRP I wouldn't think twice about it.

You should definitely not get one and let someone who actually lust for one have a chance. I think it's mainly that it'll be too small for your wrist.

Another question I have is why only the panda version?

I'd vote don't get it, especially if you don't love it. If you're not into chronograph's then there's so many other watches out there (even if you're into chronograph's IMO). At that price you could get something really nice with a well-finished movement . . . a few brands come to mind . . . Glashutte, Blancpain, Jaeger LeCoultre. But most of all, buy what you love, there's a reason why so many on TRF keep saying that. Having a watch that everyone likes but you sucks!

To each their own but FWIW I’ve never cared for the Daytona because it wears small, legibility is poor, and I hate PCL’s. I prefer the Speedmaster for these reasons. But again, to each their own.

When I first got into this hobby almost 15 years ago, I was like a lot of young guys ogling and oohing and aahing chronographs. There were so many young guys on the street wearing these watches with circles
On the dial and I was like “ Whoa!!!! Those are cool. “ Those chronographs were from many many different brands from Timex to Seiko to Tag to Breitling to Rolex. As time went on, I grew to dislike most chronographs. I think they, including the Daytona, BLEND into the crowd waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than other watches. The prominent busyness WITHIN the dial makes my eyes glaze over. Chronographs pretty much all the look the same to me from ANY brand. Of course, there are exceptions.

As such and you asked, I would NOT go for the Daytona. IMO QUICKEST way to blend into the crowd

OK so you want to be talked out of it? Here you go -

It DOES wear small. It's not overly legible. If you won't use the chronograph, then what's the point? It's ridiculously overhyped and therefore a theft magnet. The PCLs will scratch (as they all do). Once you notice the asymmetric lugs, you can't unsee them. Depending on your circumstances it's a lot of money to have on your wrist, so will you actually wear it?

If 15k on your wrist makes you uncomfortable, then don’t buy. Because it would actually be 30k on your wrist. If you’re not going to wear it, what’s the point?

amphora001 - I have never understood this line of thinking. It's not like we are supporting a charitable cause here. What do I care if another watch collector can or cannot snag a Daytona? Not trying to be mean.

I think the size issue may be the main deciding point (aside from value). I may need to seek out an exhibition model and see for myself.

As to why only a panda? Not sure, that is the only one I am draw to.

Wore my white dial 116500 Daytona to a Ferrari event. I’m not a Ferrari guy but I knew some of the car owners and they were freaking out over the Daytona. As many as we see on TRF, they are still in short supply from the ADs apparently…

Size wise, I prefer my SubC-40mm.

It wears great on my wrist, slightly larger than 7 inches. Btw, it feels exactly the same on as my Bluesy 40mm Submariner. So I have zero idea what everyone talks about with the size thing…that’s just me so my opinion…

If you think $15K is a lot to spend, your relationship with your AD may be one of politeness (or blood relations). Unlikely you will jump the line given how in demand the Panda is.

It is possible you won't still be a young man when you get the call.

For me, it was the 116520 I'd wanted for decades, if I ever had to get of all my other watches, this would be the one that would remain.

It's a tank, it will get its dings and scratches, but that's just character.

Personally, I don't think you'll regret it at all, and face it, it will just keep burning a hole in your soul until you give in...

As a chrono fan I feel there is no better proportioned watch out there esp for my 6.5 inch wrists. No one else makes an automatic with a column wheel and vertical clutch in a watch 12mm thick and under 40mm case.

Get one. I have three wouldn’t say no to more.
