Passed on OP 41

After 2 months, I received a call from my AD, that the black dial OP 41 I requested is in. I never saw the watch, prior to the request. I obviously couldn’t try it on either. After seeing it for the first time, I wasn’t thrilled. It didn’t do it for me. Reminded me of my Sarb033. While I was trying it on, a customer was walking around, and I noticed he had on the new 2022 Air King. That watch had the wow factor the OP 41 was lacking in my opinion. We struck up a conversation. He allowed me to try it on, and I immediately fell in love with it.That dial with the green second hand, yellow crown, in my opinion is cool, and different. Needless to say, I’m now waiting for the call for 2022 Air King.

However, my 36mm white dial DateJust, and SS Submariner Date are my two classic pieces. I want something different. In my opinion, the OP 41 just seemed to big for that style watch. I think 36mm is the proper size. It’s unfortunate AD have very little, or no watches on display for you to try on.

The Oyster Perpetual has been around for many decades. True the 41 is the latest generation but it’s not the first time unusual “Stella” colors have been used. I would say the basic black dial is very much a classic version. I do think in the original poster’s case it might be too similar in function to his Datejust so the Air King might indeed be a better choice.

Fortuitous chain of events. OP 41 is a great watch. Classic black, sunburst blue, and sunburst silver are the best of the bunch IMO. But if it didn't 'sing,' then no reason to buy it.

AK is indeed a cool looking watch. Funky, colorful, with good dimensions for people looking at 40mm+. I hope you get the chance to buy it soon.

The AK does have a wow factor but lacks good night lume. Still I'm waiting for one as well.

This post, it burns the eyes!! :) I've been waiting 2 years for an OP41 to give to my brother for his 41st bday. Black is his favorite color. He has a 1956 OP and I think the modern one would make the perfect 2 watch collection, a yin and yang of sorts. I highly disagree that the OP is not a classic. It is THE classic. Of course, if you don't like it, then definitely don't buy it. But for god's sake, next time call me :)

Totally agree. No other piece exemplifies the absurdity of the watch market more than this watch.

Than the black OP41? Which is the actual one the OP turned down? I feel like that’s a pretty classic watch. And the opposite of hyped.
The OP has been around since Rolex started. And if we are talking about absurdity, it’s clearly the Daytona.

Good move. If it doesn't sing to you don't just buy it because you can. I wish more buyers would follow this advice and save themselves the disappointment later when they inevitably get bored of the watch they didn't really want.

i remember getting once some doubts at the AD as well (ok it was not a pre-ordered watch, but still) and almost did not take it: found the Milgauss almost too tacky because of too large print of "Rolex" on the dial (haha go figure..)

so, i think that's part of the game! if you're a collector/connaisseur you want to pick the "right" watch for the collection and it's easy to start to overthink a bit

The fact that you ordered just two months ago (= well into the watch market downturn) and re-ordered the other watch absolves you from suspicions in that regard ))

It's all good. My wife recently passed on the 36mm pink dial OP. She truly wants the Tiffany blue. I was a bit surprised but she wants what she wants. So I get it.

You definitely made the right choice imo. If you didn't get too excited about the watch at the AD, I don't think your feeling is gonna change later on. Yes, the black OP41 is kinda "boring", but I think that is the appeal of that particular watch. It's simple, elegant and classic. You probably made someone else's day by passing on it. The next person in line was probably really happy!

As for the new AK.....I really love that watch. I have asked for one from my AD as well. I really liked the old AK, but this new one really excites me! They did a fantastic job on the latest version!

Have to agree with the 41mm, but I love my 36mm black…is not black dial is anthracite.

I think 36mm is the appropriate size for that style watch. Great watch.

Finally, someone with enough common sense to go for the watch they want and not the watch people tell them they should want. Well played, sir. Well played.
