Icon5 Decisions, Decisions.

Hey everyone. I need to vent because I can't decide what model Rolex I think my Dad would like the most. Maybe you van give me some input to help make a better choice! Make your poll choice after reading the post please

It's going to be a 70th birthday present in December and I'm not sure what the best choice would be for him. I'm sure he'd love anything we got for him since I learned that he is trying not to ruin a lousy DKNY chrono-beater I gave him to wear a few years back. He has a larger wrist than I do and I even thought that a DJ would look too puny on him. I was surprised to find that when I had him try on my DJ after buying it new I remember thinking it looked better on him than I thought it would because of the size of his wrist. He's a proud guy and has accomplished enough so he does not mind buying nice things here and there. My Dad likes being practical most of the time so I don't know. Fact is that he hasn't bought himself one yet even though he can.

Originally I thought a pre-owned DD would suit him well but I don't know how he'd feel if he found out it was not new. I can't afford a new one. A local grey dealer had one on for $10K CDN recently but I was nowhere near making a decision just browsing. I figured that I could have it serviced and change the day language to Italian for him too. She said now that the DDII's were out the DD's were fetching lower interest from buyers but even still that was a really good price-maybe even too good as far as I'm concerned. They are reputable and I even bought my Y series LV from her. Then I thought that a new DJ may be too 'oridinary' for him because I think he deserves more but then again a new TT may be just the ticket. Heck even a TT Black dialed submariner may be the winner. Now I find out that DJII is coming this year and figure a nice TT DJII would be great except for two details:

1) I think a more traditional stick dial suits him more although I think that the TT will only be available in two flavours. One with the green roman/rodium dial which I dislike OR the black concentric dial with arabic numerals that looks great to me but perhaps too trendy for his tastes? Does anyone know if there are other TT options for the forthcoming DJII?
2) Not sure if the new 41mm size will be too 'loud' for him being 70 years young.

He is a YG type of guy too. He always asks why the hell I bother with WG jewelery etc... Also note that my money tree lost a few branches a while ago...LOL

[Side-rant; crap I should have waited to get DJ!!! but now it's sentimental because it was a Jan '09 wedding gift-nm)

YG DD no doubt (funds allowing)

A man of such stature and maturity is what the YG President was made for ;)

Interestingly, i was considering this this morning... for me - steel for 21st, TT for 40th, and all gold for retirement/milestone birthday (that is my plan anyway!)

I am going to go with the YG DD as well for two reasons. First, it's the classic. Second, your dad seems to not be a fan of white metals, so he might not like the TT as well. BUT, I am not sure you can have the day/date dial changed to another language...I heard this from someone, but I do not know if it is accurate. I did know someone who had an older model YG DD for sale, but the wheel was in German.

Well, it's looking pretty unanimous so far.

YG DD.

I used to live in Florence and saw more than one older gentleman wearing the YG DD!
It really suited the Italian sense of flair and style and I would think it would suite your Dad as much as the ones I used to see on those fine old gentlemen

I guess its a go. I went to a grey dealer today and put half down on a YG DD from the late 80s or so. She had 4 to choose from and this one caught my eye from the start! It looks very clean with minor buffable scratches and minimal strech on the bracelet. Well kept watch I must say. I only had my crappy cell to take a photo but here it is. This watch has a classy looking diamond dial that is a rich blue that fades into black near the edge of the dial.

Now I need to decide where to get it serviced after I pick it up. It's a vintage so is Rolex the best place to get it serviced and ready for my Dad? I know that there are reallly great watchmakers that service these babies well and are known and recommended by members here on TRF. There was one small issue that I noticed with the watch and want it addressed when being serviced. The day displayed at 12 o clock is slightly off center and off to the left side. I also toyed with the idea of having the lanuage changed to Italian for him but wonder if they'd swap out the date wheel too since they appear to have faded a bit with time. Then I just think that for its age the watch should just be left alone with respect to that and simply serviced and polished.

Do you have any thoughts or advice for my next step?

Hey jets my guess is you purchased it from VR's on Eglinton Ave E.

I personally recommend Damiani Jewellers in Woodbridge to have service work done, they have an outstanding Rolex certified tech on site.

BTW I voted YG DD.
