Does lume matter when it comes to the day date?

It’s the age old question of Roman numerals versus batons. Do you guys feel like lume is meaningful on the Day Date? Did it enter your purchasing calculus? Appreciate the feedback. Hope you’re all safe and healthy.

I originally had the stick dial with lume and planned to wear as my only watch. But realized I prefer a small collection so traded it away to add others. Recently added the Roman dial back as more visually interesting and realized don’t need lume and would rather have more interesting dial.

I want lume on any watch I own. Unless a dedicated dress watch, which although pretty, the DayDate is not.

Same reason I picked up a Roman Datejust. I have lume on all my other pieces, excluding the Grand Seiko, and would rather have a diversity of different dials and indices.

The lume looks pretty when I shine an ultraviolet light on it. But after about 5 mins it’s “meh”

No lume needed. In my opinion the Romans are more elegant.

Lume is pretty irrelevant to me. Don’t think I ever made a watch decision based on it.

My three are Baguettes and Romans, lume is too plain jane for my taste on a Day-Date.

No lume needed. Unless you wear your watch to sleep and like to be able to see the time at night, not really necessary and it changes the aesthetic of that watch IMO

Having said that, I have a non-lumed DD with batons and a couple lumed sport watches. They get equal wrist time.

The lume is for when you are camping with your DD. I personally like the romans best. But buy what you like.

It’s an interesting question.

I honestly think I’d go baguettes just because I can’t decide

Nope. The deconstructed romans is what finally got me to pull the trigger on a DD

Prefer dials with lume over the ones without, but am willing to have dials without lume as well

I struggled with this dilemma as well and sided with no lume, and no regrets. It’s not a daily beater, nor my camping watch, but even when I wear it in low light, I’ve always been able to read the time.

Lume is largely irrelevant to me, especially Rolex lume. It provides no meaningful extra legibility and fades rapidly to imperceptibility.

Now, a Seiko SKX 100 bucks watches lume? That’s an entirely different story.

I prefer to have lume (but it’s not a deal breaker) and I dislike the Roman numerals. So, easy decision for me...

I don't need lume on the DD. Heck, I don't even need the time on the DD, let alone the ability to tell it in the dark!

It’s up to each individual. I prefer the sticks but if someone prefers Roman numerals, then who am I to judge?

When I first moved from a DD36, to a dd40 I had no idea it had lume on the dial. I hated it. It’s a really unsightly unnecessary thing for this watch and it really bugged me. Yes legibility can be a bit of an issue compared to some others of course but it’s a day date ffs we aren’t buying them to tell the time at night :)

I now have two one WG and one YG, both with baguettes as is my preference. If I were to buy another dial I would opt for romans as I really think the lume is so out of place.

But good question OP

With a split verdict of 20+ opinions I expect the split will remain interesting.

I start with a corollary - is lume part of a dress watch?

And finish with - is a DD a dress watch?

Years ago, we had the best of all worlds where just the hands on the DD were lumed with the Romans. I am partial to lume. In low light it is nice to be able to tell the time.

I prefer the lumed versions because they are easier to read, not because I necessarily want to read them in the dark. Batons with lumed hands just seem easier to read at a glance vs unlumed gold hands and roman indices which based on the lighting situation can be harder to pick up. I do agree that the roman dial is more visually interesting, so I guess maybe it depends if you wear it as a primary or part of a rotation.

Rolex appear to be phasing out DD's with lume

I don’t consider the DD a dress watch. It’s incredibly versatile.
