Which RG watch
I don't post these myself, but I'm looking for collective opinions on which watch to get.
I've been asked by a friend which watch he should get, it has to be rose gold to match his wedding ring, something he will wear on the more special occasions of his life, but one which he can take travelling, which he does a lot. He's active, outdoors, adventurous / travelling type. He wants a watch he can pass to his son and something that if needed his son could easily sell to get him out of a situation or whatever when he himself is older. This is classic rolex, explorer, sub, gmt territory or even omega speedy territory. However, he wants rose gold. Initially I recommended a Patek, 5196 5227 6119 But having grilled a bit further for the motivation behind this decision, these watches might not be the best to travel with or for his son to sell easily if he ever needs to. The last point we all know is a very rare and unlikely event but knowing him and his son, a Patek is not as durable as a rolex, neither of them are previous about possessions and whilst I'd be horrified if my kids sold a watch with sentimental reasons, I'd understand eventually, but I doubt he'd care much. His budget Is about the price of the Patek, so about 24k GBP (30k USD approx) So. My shortlist RG Choc Dial Daytona on oyster flex YM RG OF (although he prefers the Daytona) Pateks as mentioned JLC Master ultra thin moon in RG (much cheaper) - he likes it The only one from this list that might get close to ticking all of the boxes is the Daytona. Anything else I could consider, that is RG, quality and something that should hold some value if a resale ever happened in future? Thanks |

How about Patek 5524R or 7234R - i think you might be able to get one for mid $30k gray? It has 60m water resistance even though its dressy and has a dual time complication?

Everrose Daytona for solid build and durability. Excellent warranty too, 10 years if you get it from Watches of Switzerland.
Am sure your intentions are great, yet when they wear it you probably want durability. Also consider repair costs and time for service. If it costs too much or takes too long, most might just sell it (Patek used guys are infamous for selling before service). Avoid JLC imho considering your requirements, but if they really like it get it. Eh, could do worse I guess, yet the Daytona would be my pick.

been looking at RG recently myself, also to match wedding band. Love the YM, but can't get over Oysterflex.
I think I've zeroed in on a Santos or Zenith Chronomaster Sport. Or a RG cuban link bracelet. |

If it has to be rose gold and he wants a do-all watch to fit his active lifestyle of travel, the GMT Master II in rose gold would be my recommendation. For a gold bracelet watch, it's a lot more under the radar than most and it's about as tough as you're going to get for a gold watch. I also think it will stand the test of time well.

Touch more than the RG daytona you are looking at but checks all your boxes and gets your dual time complication since it is also for travel.
Otherwise in RG patek I would say 5146J, under-rated IMO

5524 was my immediate thought too
I thought 5524 - put it on a canvas bespoke strap perhaps if he wants it more casual/dressed down.

Some very interesting replies
I like the suggestions for Gmt RG Zenith A couple of Patek references mentioned too Does anyone have experience or opinions on a Lange 1 time zone? Yes it isn’t Rolex durable either but having seen the rose gold Lange use and the prices of pre owned they are tempting Primary question about the Lange 1 is how robust is the movement? He’s not a watch guy and even I’ve had issues with my perpetual Patek and JLC calendar movements. He’s not careful |

Lange 1
I haven’t had a time zone but you have nothing to worry about with the L1 movement or build quality. In hand it immediately feels very well built and robust despite being gold and a “dress” watch. ALS rg is my favourite rg and hits the box for special occasions while still sporty enough if you change up the strap. Can definitely be had for around 30k still preowned, especially if you go for the first gen 101.032. Depending on the size of his wrist the time zone might be a bit big. Most common criticism of the time zone vs classic L1 is that the dial is quite busy. There’s also the grand L1 which is as big as the time zone, moon phase L1, and daymatic (automatic) L1 which all come in rg. Day-date can be option too. The 228235 might be too expensive. If he doesn’t mind 36mm the 118235 fits a lot of the criteria. |

He should get the RG YM or Daytona. These are middle of the road nice watches and seem to reflect his preferences. A lot of perceived luxury there. Lange would be awesome, but it's much less versatile and more niche. For me, I would get a Lange.

A RG Rolex fits the bill - Patek and Lange won’t as easily stand up to an active lifestyle- especially with leather straps. I’d strongly consider a GMT RG TT or full RG.

I like your first choice RG Daytona OF. If not the 5524R.
Am I the only one who’s not tied to a ring lol I have silicone rings, steel rings etc I think of it as a gesture to my wife not some prized possession I can’t removed or switch up. Maybe I’m weird.
