Rolex Submariner 1680

Happy Sunday everyone!

Was hoping to get others' take on this 1680 that I've been offered in trade for an Omega of mine. While I've owned a handful of modern Rolex's over the years, I've never really dabbled in vintage. The current owner is stating the following regarding his 1680:

"I have a 1680 from 1977.
Legitimate collector grade. All original minus the crown tube which was replaced during service with a 702 to match the crown.
VB clasp code.
Dial and hands are mint."

My watch that I'm considering trading is an Omega Aqua Terra 18k Yellow Gold case and bracelet.

Thanks in advance for any advice/input!

I’ll let the dive watch pros comment on the 1680 as I don’t see anything obviously wrong.
I know you’re not asking about trade advice or anything, but I’m just curious to learn/understand.
What value do you put on your solid gold Omega for a straight trade like this?
Care to show a pic of it?

Looks legit at first glance. Gnarly scratch on the insert, obviously. I'm also curious about the value you're placing on the trade.

Looks like a MK1 dial. Difficult to tell authenticity without seeing, but looks good. Has correct closed 6’s and Submariner text is the right length.
Date wheel doesn’t look quite right- should be a silver date wheel, not white if original.
Service wheels were white. Easy way of telling also is the ‘26’. Should be a closed 6 on the 26 and open everywhere else.

Up in the air on trading my Omega. There is definitely something to be said about the heft of the gold on the wrist which is very enjoyable.

I don’t know the value on the Seamaster but I do know beauty when I see it.
That’s a really good looking Omega, and I’m not even an Omega guy.
Both watches look very cool yet very different, so it boils down to your preference.
As I stated, I don’t see any huge issue with the 1680 personally.
The date wheel looks like the brushed silver disk to me, but let’s see who all chimes in.

That omega looks fab and even better in gold the problem is that 1680 looks tasty as well which makes it an incredibly tough decision

Well is TRF not ORF, so the 1680 for me.

Also it's a vintage v contemporary decision.

If it's a dealer though making the offer remember they factor in 30-35% in the deal on base trade values in their favour !

If it's collector to collector usually more like 10-15% in their favour, I've found.

Rolex Submariner 1680

The sub is so much cooler, it looks like a nice example too. I’m not sure the value your putting on the Omega, but I would want the Sub.

Do you WANT a vintage Sub? Vintage watches are much more interesting than modern gold. If it was a day date I could see being on the fence. I just would hate to tell you to do the trade and you take a bath on the omega.

What are those omegas selling for?

I know what you mean. Definitely not something you see that often! Only considered trading it because I really enjoy trying different watches (few have made it into my long-term collection) and have never owned a vintage Sub. I do realize it's a whole different ball game. The more I think about it though, I'm really having a lot of fun wearing the Aqua Terra, and not sure I want to make the move. BTW.....this is the watch that was on OC Watch Guy.

Once you know the 1680 is the real deal you want it to be…

It’s the 1680 + cash from that guy methinks.

Almost everyone on here will tell you to get the sub, but that omega seems like a very special watch that would probably be difficult to replace (not sure how much), if you had regrets. Also remember the 1680 sub is a pain in the butt to set the date, if you don't wear it consistently, as it is non quickset. Keep in mind additional service costs for a vintage watch if you don't know when it was last serviced.

The vintage sub is a cool watch, but the omega is also great looking and you don't see it very often.
