what is average watch $$

I know crap watches are like $1-5. I always assume $20-50 was just average watch. I just bought a watch $125. Is this consider "expensive" or just little above average?

difficult to say. Best to compare to the rest of your collection and decide.
In the case of pretty much all TRF members, it would be a cheap acquisition.

I think unless you are a watch person, $125 would be a good investment for a watch. I think the average Swatch is about $100 these days, likewise for Citizen and similar brands.

If you are a watch person, then $125 is barley a drop in the ocean.

In mu life I have spent between $100 and $12,000 for watches and I think it all depends on what type and brand of watch you purchase. It's also relative to each person as to what they feel is expensive!!!

I'd say a watch for 125 is a low quality watch.

WRONG! There are plenty of great watches out there in that price, they just dont have the allure of some of the higher end brands.

Buy what you are comfortable with, love it and enjoy it. We do not start with a Rolex, we move into them over time. Please post pics of what you got, we would love to see!

In my opinion, one can not find a good watch under 200 dollars. Depends on how you define good thought.

I'd say for someone who doesn't collect watches, and is into watches for a hobby, then yes $125 is quite a lot of coin to drop on a watch. However, if you have already found this forum, chances are you own, or are thinking about owning something MUCH more expensive. Not to say that a $125 watch cannot do what a $12,500 watch can do, it's just one is made of finer craftsmanship/more exquisite brand name then the other.
After spending a great deal of time here on this wonderful forum, I've come to find out that one doesn't have to spend TONS of money to get a very reliable, rugged, bulletproof watch. One of those watches, is the Sieko Orange/Black Monster, which can be had new for around that price range. For $1-200 in price, you can get a lot of watch if you look in the right places.

$125 is not going to get you many decent watches. Check out Seiko divers or Vosktok Amphibians for decent quality autos at that price or less.

I have a couple of expensive watches but i still respect Swatch & Seiko :) really the price is not everything...u might see cheap watches but still fall in love with :)

Prior to the introduction of the Seiko Monsters, the 007 and 009 Seiko divers were the dive watch to own.

And I heard people with Rolex watches are stuck up. Well judging by the responses here I think not. I too enjoy any watch well maby not any but if it is a well made one that will last then it fits on my wrist just fine.

Over the years I've owned different watches for different reasons that reflected my particular needs at that time. I've had modest pieces that kept great time, and pricier models that didn't. One constant though is I've always owned a seiko of somekind, their hard to beat for the money.

Expensive is all relative. For a college kid, it's probably pretty average.

If you like it who cares what it cost.. I own a Submariner that many would say is expencive and i just bought a 200.00 Orient GMT i was looking for a watch with a GMT function a member here recomended it and we will see how it is. I bought both watches because i liked them....

Another thing i will say is there is usualy a big jump in quality from a 50.00 watch to a over a hundred dollar watch. Another large jump in quality from 100.00 to 1000.00 dollar watches. From there the diffrence in quality is far less noticeable to the average joe.
I bought a Rolex because i always admired them as long as i can remember. I loved there design and yes the prestige that i thought came along with them.
I had no idea about there history when i bought my first truth be told now i love them even more now.

The first watch my dad bought me was for my 11th birthday and it was a Guess watch with indiglo... $55. I thought it was the most expensive thing ever. I babied it until the battery died.

When I was in high school, I began looking for a watch and I stumbled onto Kenneth Cole watches at Marshall Fields (Macy's now)... 110$! I was stunned! So expensive for me. I somehow ended up with 2 within a few years.

Later, those died as well. I stopped wearing watches for the second half of college and the most of medical school.

Then my parents bought me my graduation watch - the SubDate at a cool $5K (with tax). Now, I went through multiple watches ranging in price from 800$ to nearly $8000.

So, to answer your question - 125$ is a LOT for any normal person. But for us lunatics, it's well below average. That's not to say that we won't buy a watch we like just because it costs "only" 125$.

So, enjoy your watch and keep reading on the forum. Soon you'll justify a watch that costs $1125! Then you'll somehow convince yourself that a watch costing $6125 isn't so bad either!!

I have a buddy that thinks I'm nuts to pay what I pay for my Rolex's. He likes his $40.00 Timex's (I did say Timex's as he buys 10-20 a year) I told him buy one and pass it along to your son when you croak.

For the money, I think either Seiko or Victorinox Swiss Army watches are the way to go. I like the soul of the Swiss Army.

Here are two in my collection which are good time keepers and not expensive. The Swiss Army Garrison watch can be bought new for under $75 while the Swiss Army Chrono Classic can be bought used on watch forums from fellow enthusiasts for under $150. The NATO strap is an accessory I added to my Garrison. It was only $10. I like and wear both of these watches along with my Rolex, several Omegas and a newly acquired Lum-Tec. Cheers, Bill P.

I suppose this is a prank -- if you're on this board you probably know the answer to your question. However, you can still get a decent watch for several hundred bucks. If you review items sold on Time Zone you will see that there are quite a few mechanical/automatic time pieces for around $200. Hamilton Khaki line is pretty decent and it is affordable. You can get some Hamilton watches with Valjoux 7750 for under $500.

As for my watches...

- First watch I remember paying for was around $20.
- My first watch in college was $80.
- Then I spent $200/watch on various Casio models.
- Then I got a Panerai...

For me life has never been about quantity and if I have to stick with my PAM 111 for the rest of my life then be it. It is a nice time piece.
