Thinking about trading Datographs

The datograph is my grail. Some years ago I acquired a Rose Gold Datograph up/down and it's been wonderful.

However, while I do wear it, I often don't because the watch has a massive presence, particularly in Rose Gold, and tbh that is not really my style.

I've been considering trading into a Pt Datograph 39mm, the original. But I am still a bit on the fence.

The RG up/down is very comfortable. I am worried the Pt 39mm will be less so and thus I will have less desire to wear it more often, despite it's versatility over the RG.

Also, no matter what Dato I go with, I plan to stick with the tang buckle, which I much prefer functionally. However, I know many believe a deployant is needed for the 39mm Pt to balance the weight. I won't be going that route.

Anyone have experience or advice on this trade? And before you say it, owning both is out of the question :-)

I am attracted to the 39mm case size and more understated nature of the original Dato. Thinking i will wear it more in that case.

The original Dato is for sure the best aesthetically, but many complain about wearing discomfort...very top heavy, especially with the tang buckle. I can't comment beyond that. Unfortunately it will be tough for you to try one on longer-term to see whether this will be an issue for you.

Even lange admits the original isn’t a comfortable fit so I’d try on the 41 platinum version which to me is extremely comfortable and I wear it on a tang

Ive had the OG Plat Dat 403.035 for some years and wear it often with a tang buckle, Im used to wearing 39-40 watches and at first it feel different but you get used to it to the point that it feels completely normal. I REALLY LOVE IT it has been at service since May and they just emailed me that is ready! I didnt realized how much I would missed it and cant wait to start wearing it again, hope this helps!

Get it! You won’t regret it! I am curious the weight difference between the 41mm RG vs the 39mm pt.

I choose a square padded strap and have been lucky to not be in between holes as like anything with some weight; you will want a relative snug fit in order for it not to slide around.

My wrist is ~7” for reference

I’m in the same boat as you, but have neither- have you considered the 1815 Chrono? A bit more wearable; a bit more understated; a bit less iconic.

Interesting, can’t think of a single thing functionally that is superior on a tang compared to a deployant. You find it more comfortable?

easier to take on and off. easier to set down flat. easier to observe the movement. easier to put in my pocket.

Storing flat for travel and easier to observe movement… but No!! You don’t stick this watch into your pocket

I too prefer tangs. I won't wear a deployant. I would prefer the RG you have but that's me.

You’ll likely get a lot more wear out of the pt 39mm by the sound of it. I’d go for it.

OP - before I got my 41mm PT Dato -I vacillated between the RG and the PT almost to the point of madness - but in the end went with the PT as I felt it was a bit more stealthy and wearable - so i share your opinion of the RG presence to a point - I dont think the RG brings that much of a massive presence but then again I dont own any RG watches -so perhaps I'm wrong - would suggest you try the 39mm PT but I also find the up/down feature quite helpful so perhaps take that into consideration - I also prefer a tang buckle.

If the iconic status of the Datagraph is not that important to you, the 1815 Chronograph is an amazing piece. The architecture of the movement is hard to differentiate from the Datagraph movement, and it's finished just as well.

However, it doesn't incite the same ooo's and ahhh's from the watch nerd crowd.

Seems like with every watch, I am in-between the holes for a correct fit. LOL

Lange makes a really nice tang buckle which lies very flat and to me is more comfortable than their deployant. The big thing is the added strap wear that happens with a tang buckle.

Maybe you need to get precise where your holes go on the strap. Or order a hole less strap and invest in a leather hole punch.
