My first Rolex....

Hello all,

I want to purchase my first Rolex.

I live in South Florida and there is a lot of scammers here unfortunately. I was referred to two different watch dealers. Don't know if we are allowed to mention their names or not per RF rules so I will refrain for now.

I went to Miami today and there was a Rolex with the mother of pearl dial with diamonds and a Jubilee link. I have been told this is a good daily watch and I must say that I loved it. The reference number is 126333. It was a 41 mm, a 2022 model for $16,500. Another dealer had a 2020 for 18750 and told me that the 2022 was a great buy which sounds like a great buy but I don't know anything about watches hence why I'm here.

I'm about to be 50 but pride myself on having a young look and in great shape.

I want to make sure I'm making a good buy at a good price from a good source.

Is this a good purchase with good resale value if I want to sell down the road? Are diamond dials in demand? Are they for an older demographic, younger?

I would strongly disagree with this - two-tone yellow gold and diamonds are two things I would say separately don't fit my idea of a daily, however when put together I would definitely say not! And then add in the pearl dial and I think you have a pretty loud piece there.

I don't live in the US so can't input into the proposed prices however if there are a lot of scammers then I would suggest going through an AD. Especially for a DJ, not that difficult to get.

Resale value wise... hard to comment and would always say to not think about that and to just enjoy your purchase. However you're never going to be screwed if you want to sell it down the road, put it that way. However Diamonds specially aren't necessarily everyone's thing.

If you want to make sure that you are not being scammed then go visit some AD’s in your area. Secondly, the forum has some trusted sellers, one in your state is DavidSW in Orlando. David is 100%, there are others, check the forum.

Whether or not it’s a good daily is up to you. Your opinion of your watch should be the only factor there. That particular config will be, imho, a slow seller later. It will always have some value due to its badge, but not top end.

Don't do it OP. (Unless you're a woman with big wrists). Get a nice stick dial on steel jubilee and save some money.

I don’t care for diamond dials or MOP dials, for that matter, on a man. If you are a woman, it’s fine. Get a stick dial, with fluted bezel, on jubilee. That would be a nice, fancy looking, daily wearer. Also , it would be easier to resell, should you so choose.

If I may suggest, find your nearest Mayors Jewelers and see what YOU like. They are authorized dealers of Rolex. As you know, be very careful in South Florida, so I suggest only buying from authorized dealers. This way you know you're getting an authentic Rolex with box, papers, and original valid warranty card from Rolex globally and not a 'customized' piece (or stolen.... or worse).

Why buy second hand/used watch from a flipper, unless store is offering a deal of lifetime?

Visit an authorize dealer (AD) if you view Rolex website you should locate one nearby. Rolex AD will always be a good buy and source if able to find the watch you like. DateJust models should be easy to get now or little wait time from the Rolex AD if you are patience.

I’d start with a local AD and go from there.

I'd go to a couple of local ADs, introduce yourself, start up a conversation and tell them what you're interested in. It shouldn't be too difficult for a Datejust from an AD. Just be sincere.

This, but also the DavidSW advice was my follow up answer. He’s got countless positive reviews from everyone here on the forum, and if you don’t want to wait and just get the piece you want right now his shop is the way to go. Plus it’s in Florida so if you can make the trip you can actually walk in face to face and try stuff on.

I’m sure others here would agree but I would be 100% confident buying from him that you’ll get an absolutely authentic watch at a reasonable market price (even if that market price is slightly higher than Rolex MSRP from an Authorized Dealer)

Agreed DSW is bullet proof and has a bricks and mortar store

I think based on the configuration the OP is looking for, it might be relatively easy to get at an AD. That’s why I recommend starting there.

I would think this particular watch will be hard to sell later but for a sizable loss. If resale is a factor in your decision, as said above, buy a SS model with a stick dial. I hear ADs can order these now, so you should have one configured as you want within six months or less from an AD.

Oh absolutely, and I agree that’s where I’d start too, but just mentioning if he doesn’t want to wait and the money difference isn’t significant for him he can likely get a watch he’ll love, today, from DavidSW without being put through the “newbie” “buy this first so we can establish a relationship…” game that some AD’s play. Especially in South Florida if he’s in the Miami area there’s so much money I’m sure those tactics are alive and well at some AD’s even if the OP isn’t trying to get a high demand sports piece.

I agree that a MoP dial with diamonds is not the way to go for a man. Sorry! I just don't like it on a man. Like Kat said, stick with stick markers on a plain dial and you can go with a jubilee/fluted bezel and it'll look so much better and be a daily wear for dressy or casual.

Have you tried on the datejust 36mm model? That's the true classic size of a datejust. Looks much better with better proportions in my opinion. The new 36mm models are nice.
Or, you could always buy a 1990s model 16220 datejust or something like that. Those are great watches at a great price. Or how about a 14270 explorer. Those are really classic and great models for a daily wearer.

I actually went to CRM Jewelers for this first and their price was 16.5k for this 2022. I then went to DavidSW and they had a 2020 for 18.5k.

I told the rep at DavidSW about CRM Jewelers and he told me that was a great price.

I'm glad I didn't make an impulsive buy. I hear what ya'll say about the MOP but man, in person, that watch just pops. However since I am very classic in my taste, I am reconsidering other watches based on everyones input.

This seems to be a wonderful community.

Is CRM the guys who have been all over Instagram lately wheelin' & dealin'? If so, I think their prices may reflect the increase in traffic.

Go into as many ADs as you can, tell them what you want, keep up with them (maybe a monthly text so that you're still on their radar, or go into the shop if you're in the area) & you'll get one. It's a watch, not a uranium rod. Patience will make the purchase just that much sweeter. I'll also echo the group by saying that MOP & diamonds may seem cool under the bright lights of a store, but it's not something I'd want to live with. TT on a DJ36 or DJ41, sure (mine is TT), but not with diamonds or MOP.

If this is your first, the slate/black/blue/green dials will work for daily/night out/casual. Keep it simple, keep it classic.

That's a big NO for diamonds, MOP and Rolesor Datejust (or any model of that type from any brand). Suggest you visit an authorized dealer, get on the list for a SS Datejust with an oyster bracelet (sporty) with a fluted bezel (a bit of bling) and your color choice of dial with stick markers (better resale too). Trusted sellers here may get you what you want but at a mark-up if you're okay with that and need it now. Do your research and know the MSRP from Rolex. Good luck!

Get whatever watch you want. If it is bi-metal with a mother of pearl dial and diamonds, so be it. It doesn't matter what other people think. You'll be paying for it. You'll be wearing it. If that's what you want, that's all there is.

DavidSW is excellent, beyond reproach, but it's like CarMax. You pay about $2000 more for no hassle/haggle.

You can get the same quality product anywhere else. You'll pay less at the AD if you are willing to wait, or go to any other REPUTABLE grey dealer and haggle and pay less. Even if you don't haggle, you'll probably pay less than DavidSW. In this regard, you have to determine what your time and effort is worth.

It may take a couple hours. But I, for one, don't make $1000 an hour. Do you?
