Rose gold RO

Hi guys would you pick 16202OR black dial or 15202OR blue dial? (One of the later production 15202 close to when they stopped so I think it’s not monoblock).

Buying from a grey dealer, not worried about the initial difference, looking to hold forever to pass to my son. So I guess it would be important that the watch holds its value.

I like the blue dial slightly more, but the concern here would be that 15202 has an older movement along with the lack of quick set. And who knows if in the near future would everyone no longer want a 15202OR anymore should a blue dial 16202 show up. The quantum is quite substantial so I’m deliberating would appreciate any views you can share. Thank you.

I think 16202OR comes with Smoke Slate Grey dial (not Black dial) which looks gorgeous to me. 15202OR with blue dial looks gorgeous also.

Between that 2, I would go for 16202OR, I always love the latest model and technology.

When I purchase the watch, I always go for the one I love the most at that time, I am not concerned about the future trend or pricing.

Great advice. I agree that the smoked dial on the 16202 is another level and much preferred.

OP - it sounds like you are not in a rush and already have some concerns about the 15202. So I’d hold out for a 16202. And if you’re going to be passing it on to your children, then resale value is more or less irrelevant, my opinion.

We don't know how old the son is - by the time he takes possession both the 15202 and 16202 might be equally old news. The premium for the 15202OR (away from Chrono24) is actually somewhat reasonable right now.

If you are going to hold forever and pass to your son, then holding value doesn't matter at all, so buy the one you like best.

If holding value is indeed more important than passing on, then imo AP isn't the right brand. Other than the last few years, AP doesn't hold value

Having owned the 16202or, I prefer the 15202OR blue. At the same time the 15202 has non quick set date.

Much prefer the 15202OR, owned it twice, the blue glistens against the RG. For the lack of quick set date either buy a winder or you can easily move the hour hands back and forth from 10 to 2, that will quickly change the date. Problem solved.

You are a great father, and I trust your son knows how fortunate he is.

I like it when brands differentiate their precious metal (or platinum) sports watches by using unique dials, like to a certain extent daytonas/nautilus/iceblue daydates. And AP is doing that now with the modern jumbo line, with all jumbos getting a smoked effect expect of the steel jumbo. The smokey effect is really cool, and uniquely AP to me.

If you'd rather have something more classic (and less modern), probably best to go with the 15202or blue. It seems like you're leaning to the 15202or blue anyway. The older 2121 movement is charming as it's based on the JLC movement, and I'm sure it's resilient. Lack of quick set date isn't a big issue to me, you'll just be "forced" to spend 30secs every one or two days to wind your beautiful watch; cry me a river #firstworldproblems.
