Wishing to clarify Daytona dial knowledge
I'm quite a novice and just learning about the history of the Daytona from the Zenith movements to the current iterations. I have a question tho.
I was browsing a Rolex facebook group and someone posted a picture of a Daytona. If this is a pre-ceramic Daytona dial, is it correct to say that the R from 'ROLEX' should be in line with the T from 'OYSTER'? Cos looking at the 116500 and the 126500, the R sits between S and T of 'OYSTER', much like this picture. And if that is so, does this mean this watch could possibly be using a 116xxx dial or 126xxx dial? |

No.
There are dozens of variations of the paint/ink on dials. Dials are "tamped" using a rubber, ink filled bladder (tamp). These tamps have a finite life before they are replaced with another that might not be cut the same, and they change slightly when refilled as well not to mention varied pressure when applied.

I just thought it picked up the printed pattern from one plate and placed it on the dial! Learned something today |

Dials are still made in 3 different factories but now all owned by Rolex, so there always have been, and always will be tiny variations to dials dial fonts etc over the production years.

As to "replacement" you need to know if a certain dial was available for a particular model since most all interchange. Again, it would not be a cosmetic variance that could tell you this.

yeah, that's what i thought. But it was sporting that pre-ceramic bezel, which got me quite confused. But yeah, dial interchange is not uncommon i guess. Doesn't mean it's a fake. Thanks for your input!

That gold bezel is correct for that watch and dial. TT and all gold with bracelet 116 series Daytonas all have metal (gold) bezels. The gold bezel numbering style changed I believe prior to the ceramic bezels being introduced Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
