Got the call… but watch is scratched

Got the Call… for a scratched watch?

Got the call today for Silver 126000. Was incredibly excited given the AD reached out to me only a few days after requesting this piece. I get to the private room and am shown the watch but immediately notice the number of hairline scratches all over the bracelet. I brush it off and figure the watch will be scratched up in a few months anyway but then I notice a very deep scratch above the case on the bracelet (second pic). After some back and forth… the best they can do for me is to polish the watch when their service guy is in a few days and sell it to me then. I tried asking for a discount and was told no. Then asked if they could throw in some merch and was told no. Polish is best they can do. Almost got the feeling they were annoyed with me asking for these things.

So many mixed emotions here. How did this scratch get there? Were they trying to pull a fast one on me? A bit annoyed as it’s obvious they were clearly selling me an exhibition model.

Either way, I really want this watch and have waited forever for it. For context, I’m on vacation and put the request in at an AD here to try my chances. I’m leaning towards purchasing the watch once they polish it but I feel like this whole experience has been soured for me. What would you guys do?

I’d say it’s a little cheeky trying to sell something that isn’t perfect. Will it get scratched up with use…..definitely. In an ideal situation they would do you a little discount but how much is a polish up for them? Only you can decide if you should buy it or not

They offered a free polish. Tried asking for a discount and was told no. Then tried asking if they could throw in a hat and they said no. A part of me still wants this watch as god knows long it’ll be until I’m offered one but at the same time the magic of buying the watch and the whole experience has been tainted

If you were willing to accept a cheap hat in exchange for the scratches I'd submit that they really don't bother you that much. Just buy the watch.

You relinquished your rights when you accepted it. Since then the scratch could have been made by you.

If they accept a return, return it and wait. If you think you can move past this (minuscule) scratch. Keep it.

It does not sound like he has purchased and taken possession yet.

But you are 100% right if he had. Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.

It doesn’t sound like OP actually completed the purchase. The scratches were on the watch when he was getting ready to purchase it. It was probably an exhibition piece and was scratched by everyone man handling it.

Yeah, no. The so-called free polish could make it worse. Just pass. Even with ten free hats.

If you haven’t purchased the watch yet you can walk away.

I’d pass

It's your call, but tiny scratches on case/bracelet on SS watch would not bother me. I would buy it if you want that watch.

I once bought a TAG Heuer with a lug scratch which I only noticed when I got mome. The AD offered a polish, discount, refund or new watch. I took the next new one that came in.

I now examine every new watch I buy closely. Shit happens, but the conversation you recount sounds highly unprofessional for a Rolex AD, the sort of behavior which should be discouraged as opposed to so many of the silly accusations we get in TRF.

I will not buy it. If it is not RSC that do the polish, I would not let anyone do the polish on my watch.

Not this time. Like Adam said, the free polish could really cause more damage. Pass. Though you may not get another watch from them. Just move on from them entirely.

Pass. If I bought it I would always wonder what else I did not know about the watch. You go to an AD for a NEW watch and that is right of you to expect. If you wanted a watch that has been handled or scratched you would go gray. Wait for a new one you will thank yourself every day after for doing so.

You say you’re on vacation so it’s possible you’ll not be buying anything from them again.

Personally I’d pass. It’s shop soiled and they expect top dollar for it. Bit of a liberty in my book

Since you haven’t purchased it, I’d let them polish it then make your decision. A light bracelet polish isn’t difficult (well…it shouldn’t be) for an AD.
If it’s not perfect after the polish job, walk away/wait for the next one.

Have to agree it's a very very minor scratch easily rectified with a slight polish would not worry me the slightest.

^bingo^^. Since they are so confident about their ability to polish those out, let them do it on their dime and then you decide. At this point it’s a damaged watch. If you went through the considerable trouble and time of trying to buy through an AD you would at least expect the watch to be new. I guarantee this won’t happen with one of our respected sellers like Thann, Patrick, etc….

I had the same situation with my PP Nautilus. I saw it at the time of purchase, just a hairline scratch on the bezel, didn't even raise this as an issue, not because it is a Nautilus, just because I would scratch it immediately when I start wearing it anyway.
